CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-ranked North Carolina and 17th-ranked Duke recorded victories Friday night in the first day of action at the Nike Carolina Women's Soccer Classic before a crowd of 3,145 fans at Fetzer Field. The Blue Devils outshot Orehon 35-13 in the first game of the doubleheader but despite the dominance it was an unassisted goal by Alexis Highsmith in the game's 20th minute that lifted Duke to a 1-0 victory. In the nightcap, the Tar Heels were brutally efficient on the offensive end of the field, taking 24 shots in the first 64 minutes of the game while drubbing South Carolina 9-1.
UNC senior forward Meredith Florance scored a career high four goals while moving into 15th place on the Tar Heels' all-time scoring list and the Tar Heels set a school record for assists in a game while improving their record to 5-0. South Carolina fell to 0-4 on the campaign.
No Tar Heel had scored four goals in a game since September 11, 1995 when Debbie Keller scored a quartet in an 8-0 win over NC State. Florance's only previous hat trick came when she scored three times in her first career game at Fetzer Field, an 8-0 win over Tennessee on September 5, 1997. Sophomore forward Kim Patrick had two goals for the Tar Heels and single goals were scored by senior defender Kalli Kamholz, sophomore midfielder Leslie Gaston and freshman striker Carmen Watley.
UNC's 15 assists in the game were two more than the school record of 13 recorded against Tennessee on September 5, 1997, the same game in which Florance had scored her previous career high three goals. Junior midfielder Anne Remy recorded a career-high four assists, while Kamholz and senior midfielder Raven McDonald each had two assists.
Florance's nine points in the game moved her into 15th place in career scoring at UNC with 111 points. She now has 41 career goals, tying her for 13th place in UNC history.
Carolina put the game away early a Patrick scored twice and Florance once in the first 8:32 of the contest. South Carolina freshman Jessica Julin scored the Gamecocks' first goal of the season in the 10th minute on a header off a corner kick by fellow Finnish freshman Miia-Maria Heinonen.
The Tar Heels came back to score three more times before halftime with Gaston, Florance and Kamholz adding goals to make it 6-1 11:36 before intermission. Florance scored twice more and Watley tallied at the 63:51 mark to make the score 9-1. At that point, UNC coach Anson Dorrance cleared his bench and instructed his players not to shoot. UNC starting goalkeeper Jenni Branam also came out of the game at that point. She saw her last action until an October 11 game at NC State. She is leaving Saturday to join the U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team in Sydney, Australia as the squad's third-string goalkeeper as the Americans seek to defend the gold medal they won in Atlanta in 1996.
In the opener, Duke (4-0) remained unbeaten by dominating the Ducks (3-3) on both ends of the field. Still, Highsmith's goal in the 20th minute was the only scoring as she beat the Duck defense downfield and tucked the ball inside the right post from 16 yards out. Duke goalkeeper Isis Dallas was called on to make five saves for the Blue Devils while Oregon's Sarah Peters was amazing, making 17 saves to keep the Webfoots in the game until the bitter end.
In Sunday's Carolina Nike Classic action the Tar Heels (5-0) and the Ducks (3-3) will play the opener at 1 p.m., followed by the Blue Devils (4-0) and the Gamecocks (0-4) at 3 p.m.
