CHAPEL HILL --- Former University of North Carolina Basketball Coach Dean Smith has issued the following statement regarding the death of Al McGuire:

"I was very saddened and surprised when I heard the news this morning. I spoke with Billy Packer who saw Al just a couple of days ago and Billy said Al was in good spirits. Al never got enough credit for being a truly great coach because he didn't use the same x's and o's as many other coaches did. Al was a maverick - he did it his way. But as they say, his record will speak for itself. I'll miss him and wish his family the best."
