Tar Heel Baseball Team Tops High Point, 10-6

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina baseball team erased a 3-0 fifth-inning deficit to score a 10-6 win over the High Point Panthers Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina improves to 6-2, while High Point falls to 3-6.
Jason King (1-0) pitched 2.0 innings out of the bullpen and allowed one run on one hit while walking two for his first career win. Matt Tanner earned the save after going the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits. Bo Dickerson made the start for Carolina and allowed three runs on six hits over 4.1 innings.
High Point starter Clayton Gordner (0-2) pitched 4.2 innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits while striking out two for the loss.
High Point jumped out to its 3-0 lead with two runs in the third and a solo homer by Jayson Hoffman in the fifth. But the Tar Heels, who had been held to just one hit through the first four innings by Gordner, exploded for six runs on six hits in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman Jeremy Cleveland, making his first start at third, got UNC going in the fifth with a leadoff single to left. Russ Adams knocked in Carolina's first runs of the game with a two-run double, Jason Howell's two-run single gave UNC its first lead at 4-3 and a two-run triple by Ron Braun pushed the lead to 6-3.
The Panthers responded with a run in the top of the seventh to cut the Tar Heel lead to 6-4, but Carolina again answered. Brandon Russell's two-run single highlighted a three-run bottom of the seventh for a 9-4 Tar Heel advantage. Chris Maples also scored in the inning on a wild pitch by Panther reliever David White.
UNC tacked on one more run in the eighth for its 10th run. Adams (3-for-5, 2 RBIs) led off the eighth with a double, his second of the game, and later scored on a Ryan Blake single. Jason Howell, who finished 2-for-4 to up his team-high batting average to .409, also had a double in the eighth.
High Point threatened with two runs in the top of the ninth, but Tanner got Andy Harney to ground out to second base with the bases loaded to end the game.
Carolina returns to action with games Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (1:30 p.m.) versus Seton Hall at Boshamer Stadium. The Pirates have not yet played this season.
