As part of TarHeelBlue.com's comprehensive pre-game coverage of
Sunday's Carolina-Duke game at the Smith Center, we have highlighted --
with exclusive audio clips -- one of the great games in the classic rivalry. We hope you enjoy hearing the original audio from some of the memorable moments in UNC's 75-73 over the top-ranked Blue Devils in 1992.
The emotion to start this game symbolized the intense rivalry between Duke and UNC. Entering the game at the Smith Center, Duke was riding a 23-game winning streak and was ranked No. 1 in the country. The Tar Heels were 15-3, ranked No. 9 and looking to upset the undefeated 17-0 Blue Devils. Junior George Lynch opened the game with a layup, followed by sophomore Brian Reese's 3-pointer to put UNC up early in the first half.

After leading by one point at halftime, Duke fell behind the Tar Heels early in the second half as UNC hung on to a nine-point lead. But the Blue Devils battled back and soon cut into the lead to make it a two point game with 13 minutes remaining. A jumper by senior Hubert Davis followed by a dunk by sophomore Kevin Salvadori re-energized the Smith Center crowd and put the Tar Heels up six.

A little luck never hurts. Sophomore Derrick Phelps attempts to loft an alley-oop to Eric Montross but finds the back of the net instead for a 3-pointer putting the Tar Heels up seven with 11 minutes remaining.

With the score tied after a Christian Laettner layup, Derrick Phelps answers the call with two foul shots of his own to put the Tar Heels up two with 44 seconds left on the clock. Laettner's heroic attempts fall short as he misses two shots in the waning moments of the game and Phelps grabs the final rebound to secure the Tar Heels upset of the top-ranked Blue Devils, much to the delight of Woody Durham.
