Carolina Track Produces Top Performances At The Tar Heel Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C.--The University of North Carolina men's and women's track team used the Tar Heel Invitational as a tune-up for the ACC Championships next weekend. Carolina succeeded, producing several NCAA provisional qualifying marks and shattering two school records and 13 first-place finishes.
Ola Sesay won the long jump with a provisional qualifying leap of 20'07.25". Suzanne Fish and Stefani Dixon share a new school record in the pole vault with a mark of 12'00.50". Dixon, who was second due to a jump-off, owned the previous record of 11'11.75", which she set last weekend at the Texas Relays. Jill Pedretti won the discus with a personal best toss of 177-11 and finished third in the javelin with a season best throw of 146-2. Lutisha Shittu won the 100-meter dash in 11.99 and took second in the 100 meter hurdles in 13.77. Crystal Cox placed first in the 200 meters crossing the line in 24.64. Edi Ntuen walked away with a first place finish in the 400 meters in a time of 54.96. Tiffany Flomo won the 400-meter hurdles in a season best 1:01.18. Ibiene Bilyae-Benibo finished first in the shot put with a toss of 46'08.75". Joy Ganes won the high jump in 5'09.25" with Dixon second (5'04.50").
Sal Gigante won the hammer throw with a NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 202-11, setting a new UNC school record. Gigante held the previous record of 202-7 set last year. Brent Callaway bettered his personal best of 17'04.50" with a leap of 17'09.00" in the pole vault. Carolina swept the men's shot put with Ian Douglas bettering his provisional mark with a toss of 59'04.75". Gigante was second (54'03.75') and John Ridgway was third (52'02.50"). Douglas and Gigante teamed up again in the discus placing first and third respectively. Mike Cvelbar won the javelin with a throw of 193-7. Joey Handy won the long jump with a season best 22'10.50".
Carolina travels to Orlando, Florida this weekend for the 2001 ACC Outdoor Championships. The meet will be held Friday (April 20) and Saturday (April 21) at the Walt Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
