
Women's Lacrosse Dominates UMass, 20-5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Kellie Thompson scored five goals as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated Massachusetts, 20-5, at Henry Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Thompson also added two assists for seven total points on the day. UNC matched its highest goal output of the year with the 20-5 win in the final regular-season game of the season for the Tar Heels. UNC also scored 20 goals in a 20-1 victory over Virginia Tech on March 27.
With the win, Carolina improves to 10-6 in the 2001 campaign. Massachusetts falls to 6-9 with the loss.
Lindsay Stone had four goals and two assists for UNC, while Erin McInnes had three goals and an assist. Amy Havrilla (two goals), Christine McPike (two) and Brooke Young (two) all also had multi-goal games for the Heels.
Thompson and McInnes each scored three goals in the first half as the Tar Heels jumped out to an 11-3 lead. Lindsay Stone had two goals and an assist, while Amy Havrilla returned to the starting lineup and tallied two first-half goals after not starting against Dartmouth on Friday due to a hip injury. UNC outshot the Minutewomen, 24-7, and won 11 of 15 draw controls.in the opening period.
In the second half, Carolina widened its lead, outscoring the Minutewomen, 9-2, in the game's final 30 minutes. Stone, Young and Thompson all scored two goals in the second half for the Tar Heels.
Fay Naber and Jada Emory each scored twice in the contest for Massachusetts.
Carolina now awaits an NCAA Touranment bid, to be announced next Sunday evening. NCAA Tournament first-round games begin on May 9-10.
