Former Carolina All-America outfielder Tyrell Godwin was selected in the third round of Tuesday's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Godwin, selected in the first round out of high school by the New York Yankees in 1997 and with a first round "sandwich pick" by the Texas Rangers last year, was taken with the 91st pick of today's draft.
Godwin appeared to be headed to Texas last summer before he passed on an offer from the Rangers and underwent surgery on his right knee. Godwin returned to school and earned a history degree in December, while he spent the spring finishing his rehabilitation.
The Council, N.C., native finished his UNC career with a .362 batting average and 142 RBIs. He stole 54 bases over three years, hit 22 home runs and was a first-team All-ACC pick in 1999 and a second-team selection in 2000.
