Finishing Problems Don't Keep Women's Soccer From 8-0 Start

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - Chances are, the top-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team is returning to the Triangle tonight a tired team. They are also returning to Chapel Hill still undefeated.
A pair of players who usually hang out on the defensive end of the field for Carolina provided the goals Sunday afternoon as the Tar Heels defeated UAB 2-0 before 2,362 at the West Campus Field. Carolina's goals were recorded by junior defender Leslie Gaston and sophomore midfielder Maggie Tomecka, both players scoring for the third time this season. North Carolina improved to 8-0-0 exactly halfway through its regular season while UAB dropped to 2-6-0 on the campaign.
The game was Carolina's fifth in the last 10 days, all on the road. It was also the third contest in the last five days as UNC won at Tennessee 5-2 last Wednesday, at Auburn 2-0 Friday night and at UAB today. There will be no rest for Carolina's weary legs this week either as the Tar Heels open up their 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference season by playing at Duke Tuesday at 7 p.m. and at Maryland Friday at 7 p.m.
Against the Blazers on Sunday, Carolina dominated the statistics for the second time in three days but had trouble finding the back of the net. Friday night against Auburn, UNC outshot the Tigers 23-2 but won by only a 2-0 score. It was almost the same scenario Sunday as Carolina outshot the Blazers 26-6 and had nine corner kicks to only two for UAB. Lisa Nowoslawski had 14 saves in goal for the Blazers, similar to the 11-save performance by Auburn Friday night.
Still, the Carolina defense held strong as the Tar Heels recorded their seventh shutout of the season in eight games. North Carolina has outscored its opponents 34-2 so far this campaign.
UNC opened up the scoring at 16:42 as Gaston tallied her third goal of the campaign on a header. Senior defender Danielle Borgman assisted on the goal, her fourth assist of the season. The Tar Heels added an insurance goal at 59:06 off a corner kick play. Sophomore defender Catherine Reddick, playing in her hometown of Birmingham, initiated the play. The ball was flicked on by freshman midfielder Sara Randolph and Tomecka redirected the ball into the ball of the net. Reddick's assist was her fourth of the year and Randolph's assist was her third.
Tar Heel head coach Anson Dorrance used all 19 players on his roster as he substituted liberally all day in advance of Carolina's two road ACC games to open the conference season this week. Kristin DePlatchett, who played the first half in goal for UNC, even came back on as a field player in the second half to rest tired legs on the forward line.
DePlatchett played 45 minutes in goal for Carolina and had two saves. Jenni Branam played the second half and had three saves. Carolina's goalie tandem has allowed only two goals this season in 720 minutes of play.
Tuesday's game against Duke will be broadcast live on www.tarheelblue.com. The broadcast is being sponsored by UNC HealthCare. It will be the fourth internet broadcast of Carolina women's soccer this year. UNC's home games against Florida State on October 12, Wake Forest on October 14, Clemson on October 18 and NC State on November 1 will also be broadcast live on www.tarheelblue.com.
