Tar Heels Hope to End Two-Game Slide at Home vs. Cavaliers
* Carolina returns to Chapel Hill to host Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia on Saturday at noon in the Smith Center. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
* After winning three straight contests to close the 2001 calendar year, the Tar Heels have lost their last two games - by 22 at home last Saturday against Wake Forest and by 33 on Wednesday night at Maryland.
* The Tar Heels hold a 15-1 edge over the Cavaliers in games played in the Smith Center. UVa beat Carolina, 90-76, during the 1999-2000 season for its lone victory on UNC's current home court. Overall, Carolina is 57-4 against Virginia in games played in Chapel Hill (with the Virginia wins coming in 1911, 1973, 1981 and 2000).
* Carolina and Virginia split a pair of games last season. UNC beat UVa 88-81 in the Smith Center on Jan. 24, 2001 behind 33 points from Joseph Forte and a field goal percentage of 56.9 as a team. In the return matchup in Charlottesville on Feb. 25, all five Cavalier starters scored in double figures and the Cavs hit 11 three-pointers to down the Heels, 86-66.
* Carolina is 4-4 at home this season. The school record for home losses in a season is five (set in 1929-30, 1943-44 and 1999-2000). The Tar Heels have lost four home games three times (1938-39, 1951-52 and this season).
* The Tar Heels are in the midst of a six-game stretch that includes four road games. UNC lost at Maryland on Jan. 9 and host Virginia on Saturday. Carolina will hit the road again next week for games at Florida State (Wednesday night) and at Connecticut (next Saturday afternoon). UNC then hosts NC State and visits Clemson to close the six-game stretch.
* Virginia (No. 7 in the AP poll) is Carolina's third straight AP-ranked opponent (joining No. 23 Wake Forest last Saturday and No. 4 Maryland on Wednesday). The last time the Tar Heels played three consecutive ranked opponents was when they played four in a row during their 2000 NCAA Final Four run (No. 3 Stanford, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 18 Tulsa and No. 13 Florida). The last time Carolina played back-to-back top-10 opponents was at the 1999 ACC Tournament (Carolina beat No. 5 Maryland in the semifinals and lost to No. 1 Duke in the finals).
* In UNC's most recent game, Maryland scored 112 points (the most ever given up by Carolina) and shot 57.9 percent from the floor to defeat the Tar Heels, 112-79. Juan Dixon had 29 points and eight steals and Steve Blake had 12 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds for Maryland. Jason Capel tied his career scoring high with 27 points for UNC.
With a UNC Win Saturday ...
* Carolina will even its 2001-02 ACC record at 2-2.
* Carolina will improve to 5-4 at home and rise above .500 at the Smith Center for the first time this season after starting 0-3 at home.
* Carolina will improve to 16-1 against Virginia in the Smith Center and 58-4 all-time at home against the Cavaliers.
With a UNC Loss Saturday ...
* Carolina will fall to 4-5 at home this season and tie the school record for home losses in a season (set in 1929-30, 1943-44 and 1999-2000).
Young Tar Heels Learning on the Job
Two freshmen guards - guard Melvin Scott and swingman Jackie Manuel - have been in the starting lineup together in eight games this season. This is the first time UNC has started two freshmen in the backcourt since first-year players became eligible to play on the varsity in 1972-73. Should Manuel, Scott and freshman forward Jawad Williams all start any time this season, it would be the first instance in which Carolina started three freshmen in a single game.
