UNC Adds Four Men's Golfers For 2002-03

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- North Carolina Head Coach John Inman has announced that four student-athletes will join the Tar Heel golf program in the fall of 2002.
Kevin Silva, from New Bedford, Mass., Ted Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, Fernando Figueroa, from San Salvador, El Salvador and Alan Burnett, from Charlotte, N.C., have all committed to play for the Tar Heels.
"We are very pleased to have four players joining us who were all ranked in the top 150 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings on signing day," says Inman. "Not only are all of these young men excellent students and just the kind of student athletes we"re trying to attract, but they"ve shown the ability to play golf on a very high level in national tournaments."
Silva, ranked 14th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, is a two-time Massachusetts High School Individual Champion (1999, 2001). He also won the 2001 New England Invitational and the 2001 AJGA Chateau Elan Championship. Silva finished fourth at the 2001 PGA Junior Championship and was named to the 2001 Polo All-America second team.
Smith, ranked 51st in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, is a two-time champion of the Hudson Junior Invitational (2000, 2001) and a two-time honorable mention Polo All-America (2000, 2001). He was the runner-up at the 2001 Ohio Division I High School Championships and two-time champion of the Ohio All-Catholic Tournament (1999, 2001), Smith is a two-time All-Ohio Division I golfer (2000, 2001), 2001 District Player of the Year and named to the All-Ohio Academic team in 2000 and 2001.
Figueroa, ranked 107th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, is the 2000 Central American Junior Champion. He won the El Salvador National Junior in 1999 and 2001 and was a member of the El Salvador National Team in 1998 and 2000. Champion of the 1999 Guatemala National Junior, Figueroa finished fourth at the 2001 AJGA Golfweek "Top 100" Tournament.
Burnett, ranked 147th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, is the 2001 Mid Pines Junior Invitational champion. He is the 1999 North Carolina High School State champion and named to the North Carolina All-State Team in 1999 and 2000. Burnett is the 1999 IJGT Palm Coast champion and named the Charlotte Observer Player of the Year in 1999 and 2001.
