Winston-Salem -- The 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Southeast Regional ended Monday, and members of the Carolina women's tennis team took second place in the singles and doubles competitions. Senior Kate Pinchbeck represented the Tar Heels in the final of the singles draw as the No. 1 seed. Pinchbeck and Senior Kendrick Bunn competed in the doubles final as the No. 7 seed.
Clemson's Julie Coin defeated Pinchbeck in the final of the singles draw 7-6(5), 6-2. Coin, a sophomore, was the No. 7 seed in the tournament. As finalists, Pinchbeck and Coin automatically qualify to compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas, Nov. 8-11.
The Kentucky doubles pair of Jill Buckley and Amy Trefethen from Kentucky defeated Pinchbeck, Bunn in the final of the doubles competition 8-3. Buckley and Trefethen were the No. 3 seed in the doubles draw. Their win also qualifies them for the ITA National Championships.
Coach Jenn Callen said: "I am pleased with the performances from Kate and Kendrick this weekend. Kate trains like a professional, comes out for extra practice sessions frequently and deserves this opportunity to represent UNC at the National Indoor Championships in Dallas. She played well throughout the tournament and had some great wins. It was also exciting to see the doubles tandem of Bunn/Pinchbeck back together after a year long hiatus."
