Tar Heels Beat Wake Forest To Advance To NCAA Third Round

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The North Carolina women's soccer team advanced to the third round of the 2002 NCAA Women's College Cup Sunday with a 3-1 victory over Wake Forest in the second round of the tournament at Fetzer Field.
Goals by Catherine Reddick, Sara Randolph and Anne Morrell lifted the Tar Heels to the victory. North Carolina will host its NCAA Tournament third round match next Saturday at Fetzer Field at 5 p.m. The Tar Heels improved to 19-1-4 on the season with the victory while the Demon Deacons saw their season end at 13-8-1.
Carolina opened the scoring at 37:45 after a foul against Reddick just outside the penalty area. Reddick then blasted a free kick from about 26 yards through the Wake Forest wall. Demon Deacon goalkeeper Erin Regan got her hands on the ball but was unable to stop the blast from going over the line. It was the fifth goal of the season for Reddick.
Shortly after halftime the Tar Heels increased their lead to 2-0 as Randolph notched her second goal of the season. Lindsay Tarpley fed the ball up the left sideline to Elizabeth Ball who crossed from the left wing. Randolph gathered the ball on one hop and coverted past an on-rushing Regan. The Demon Deacons had no intention of going away however as Joline Charlton scored her third goal of the season assisted by Katherine Winstead at 61:48. Winstead sent a through ball from the midfield that Charlton gathered in as she rushed past the Tar Heel and finished into the lower left side of the goal.
UNC added the insurance goal at 82:20 on Morrell's ninth goal of the campaign. Reddick sent a ball into the box from the left side that was flicked on by Tarpley to Morrell who finished into the top shelf. Carolina outshot the Deacons 20-5 and had six corner kicks to one for UNC. Jenni Branam had three saves in the goal for UNC while Regan finished with two saves for the Demon Deacons.
