TONIGHT'S GAME: Virginia
* The Tar Heels will play on the road for the third time in their last four games when Carolina visits Virginia on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. in University Hall. The game will be televised by Raycom/Jefferon-Pilot.
* The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with Virginia, 114-44. The Cavaliers downed Carolina, 71-67, last month in Chapel Hill. UNC leads the series, 22-14, in games played at University Hall and 39-27 in games played in Charlottesville.
* Virginia has won four of the last five games in the series with the Tar Heels, including wins in Charlottesville in each of the last two seasons.
* Carolina and Virginia split a pair of games last season. UNC beat UVa 88-81 in the Smith Center on Jan. 24, 2001 behind 33 points from Joseph Forte and a field goal percentage of 56.9 as a team. In the return matchup in Charlottesville on Feb. 25, all five Cavalier starters scored in double figures and the Cavs hit 11 three-pointers to down the Heels, 86-66.
* With its loss to Maryland on Sunday night, Carolina (2-9 ACC) set a new school record for ACC losses in a season. UNC went 6-8 in ACC play in 1963-64, Dean Smith's third year as Carolina head coach.
* This year, the Tar Heels are nine games under .500 in a season for the first time in school history.
* Carolina is 1-6 on the road this season with the lone win coming at Clemson on Jan. 27.
* After tonight's contest at Virginia, the Tar Heels return home for back-to-back games - against Florida State on Sunday afternoon and Ohio on Feb. 20 (UNC's final non-conference game of the season).
Earlier this Season vs. the Cavaliers
Carolina led Virginia 48-40 with 14:20 to play, but dropped a 71-67 decision in the Smith Center on Jan. 12.
Roger Mason Jr. broke a 63-63 tie with a driving bank shot with 3:09 to play and hit four free throws in the final minute to clinch the win for UVa.
Kris Lang led the Tar Heels with 18 points. Jason Capel scored 14 points and Jawad Williams added 13. Carolina committed 15 turnovers, nine in the second half.
LAST GAME: Maryland
Carolina played well, outscoring No. 3 Maryland in the second half, but dropped a 15-point decision to the Terrapins, 92-77, in the Smith Center on Feb. 10.
Juan Dixon led five Terp double-figure scorers with 18 points. Lonny Baxter had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Byron Mouton 16 points and six rebounds for Maryland. Jawad Williams had the best game of his career to date for the Tar Heels, posting his first career double-double. Williams set career highs with 21 points and 11 rebounds and tied his season high with five assists. He also made a season-high six free throws and went to the line a season-high 10 times.
Kris Lang led UNC with 23 points. Jason Capel fouled out after just 18 minutes with five points and two rebounds.
Carolina committed 13 turnovers in the game, almost half the 25 it committed in its first matchup with Maryland in College Park in January. The Tar Heels shot 51.4 percent from the floor in the second half but could not overcome a 17-point halftime deficit.
With a Tar Heel Win Tonight . . .
* ... Carolina will break a four-game losing streak that began Jan. 31 against Duke.
With a Tar Heel Loss Tonight . . .
* ... Carolina (6-15) will break the school record with its 16th loss of the season. UNC lost 15 games in both 1950-51 and 1951-52.
