TODAY'S GAME: Ohio
* The Tar Heels will play their final non-conference game of the season when they host Ohio of the Mid-American Conference on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Smith Center. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2. Three of Carolina's final five regular-season games will be played in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels also will play road games at NC State on Feb. 24 and at Duke in the regular-season finale on March 3.
* The Tar Heels lead the all-time series with Ohio, 1-0. In the only prior game played between the two schools, Brad Daugherty led all scorers with 17 points as Carolina cruised to a 99-57 win over the Bobcats in Carmichael Auditorium on Dec. 14, 1985. Twelve different Tar Heels scored in the game, with Jeff Lebo (11) and Ranzino Smith (11) also scoring in double figures.
* Jason Capel is the only forward (or center) among the top 15 players in the ACC in assists. He ranks 11th in the conference with 3.05 assists per game.
* Entering Wednesday's game, Carolina is hoping for its first winning streak since late December. The Tar Heels won three games in a row over Saint Joseph's, N.C. A & T and Texas A & M to close out the 2001 calendar year. Since that three-game winning streak, Carolina is 2-11 (with the wins coming on Jan. 27 at Clemson and last Sunday at home against Florida State).
* With its loss at Virginia on Feb. 12, Carolina (6-17) set a new school record for most losses in a season. UNC lost 15 games in both 1950-51 and 1951-52.
* With its loss to Maryland on Feb. 10, Carolina (now 3-10 in the ACC) set a new school record with its ninth ACC loss of the season. UNC went 6-8 in ACC play in 1963-64, Dean Smith's third year as Carolina head coach.
* This year, the Tar Heels are nine games under .500 in a season for the first time in school history. Prior to this season, UNC had never been six games under .500 at any point.
* Carolina is 5-8 at home this season. The eight losses are the most home defeats in a season in UNC history (the previous record was five).
* After tonight's contest, Carolina visits NC State on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The Tar Heels will then close out their regular season with a Feb. 27 home game against Clemson and a March 3 game at Duke.
Williams Doubtful for Ohio Game
Freshman forward Jawad Williams sprained his right ankle in Sunday's win and is doubtful for Carolina's game on Wednesday against Ohio University.
Williams suffered the injury in a pileup under the basket late in the game against Florida State. He left the Smith Center Sunday evening with the aid of crutches. X-rays on Monday showed a sprain, but no fracture.
Williams is averaging 9.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game this year. He is third on the team in scoring and rebounding behind seniors Jason Capel and Kris Lang.
LAST GAME: Florida State
The Tar Heels scored a season-high 55 points in the second half and shot 66.7 percent after halftime (a season-high for a half) to top Florida State, 95-85, in the Smith Center on Feb. 17. The game was the first this season in which Carolina had trailed at halftime and come back to win (UNC is now 1-14 when trailing at the half). The Carolina victory broke a five-game losing streak.
Fifteen former Tar Heels came back to show their support for the program, meeting with the current crop of Carolina players prior to the game.
The Tar Heels tied their season high by shooting 55.4 percent from the floor for the game. Adam Boone led UNC with a career-high 28 points, hitting a career-high six three-pointers and a career-high eight free throws. Kris Lang (21 points and a career high-tying four assists) and Jason Capel (20 points, eight rebounds and four assists) also reached the 20-point mark for Carolina.
The game marked the first time in over four years that three Tar Heels topped 20 points in scoring. On Jan. 8, 1998, Vince Carter (22), Antawn Jamison (20) and Shammond Williams (20) exceeded 20 points vs. Georgia Tech.
Monte Cummings led Florida State with 28 points.
Tar Heels Tops in Merchandising - Again
Carolina led over 180 universities nationwide in licensing revenues for the second half of 2001, the Collegiate Licensing Co. announced last week. According to UNC director of auxiliary services Rut Tufts, Carolina's revenues from July to December 2001 were $1.8 million, up 11 percent from $1.6 million for the same period in 2000.
Seventy-five percent of the net revenue is used for general scholarships on campus and 25 percent goes to the athletic department.
