TONIGHT'S GAME: Wake Forest
* The Tar Heels take to the road for the second game in a row and will visit Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. The game will be televised by Raycom/Jefferson-Pilot in the Atlantic Coast Conference area.
* Carolina is 1-5 on the road this season, with the lone win coming last Sunday at Clemson. Prior to that victory, the Tar Heels had lost six straight road games (dating to last season). UNC has lost seven of its last eight road games overall.
* Carolina leads the all-time series against Wake Forest, 146-58. The two teams have split their last six meetings. The Tar Heels swept the home-and-home series from the Demon Deacons last season with a one-point win at the Smith Center and a six-point win in Winston-Salem.
* The Tar Heels lead the series over the Demon Deacons in games played in Winston-Salem, 51-26. UNC is 7-5 against the Deacons at Lawrence Joel Coliseum.
* Carolina also is 4-0 at Joel Coliseum in NCAA Tournament play. The Tar Heels won first- and second-round games there on the way to the 1993 NCAA championship and the 1997 Final Four. Former head coach Dean Smith became the winningest coach in NCAA history with the second-round win over Colorado in '97.
* This year, the Tar Heels are seven games under .500 in a season for the first time in school history.
Earlier this Season vs. the Demon Deacons
Wake Forest grabbed 18 offensive rebounds and forced 21 Carolina turnovers on its way to an 84-62 win over UNC in Chapel Hill. The 22-point loss was the Tar Heels's most lopsided ever in the Smith Center (since eclipsed by Duke) and its worst loss at home since a 96-74 loss to Maryland in Carmichael Auditorium on Feb. 15, 1975.
Josh Howard finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals to lead the Demon Deacons. Steve Lepore came off the bench to hit three three-pointers and score 15 points in 22 minutes for Wake.
The Tar Heels committed 21 turnovers and allowed 18 Wake offensive rebounds.
LAST GAME: Georgia Tech
Carolina hit 14 three-pointers but shot just 37.5 percent from the floor overall and lost an 86-74 decision at Georgia Tech on Feb. 2. Other than the 14 three-pointers, the Tar Heels hit just seven two-point field goals in the game.
Tony Akins led the Yellow Jackets to the win, leading all scorers with 28 points and also tallying seven assists and four steals. As a team, Tech hit 12 three-pointers. The Jackets hit nine of their three-pointers in the second half, scoring 52 points and hitting 58.6 percent of their shots after halftime.
Jason Capel led the Tar Heels with 21 points and Brian Morrison added 16 points. Both Capel and Morrison hit four three-pointers.
Morrison Solid in Last Two Contests
Sophomore shooting guard Brian Morrison (Redmond, Wash.) has played very well offensively in Carolina's last two outings. On Jan. 31 versus No. 1 Duke, Morrison was UNC's only double-figure scorer, finishing with 12 points and four assists. Two days later at Georgia Tech, he connected on four three-pointers and finished with 16 points.
Morrison totaled just eight combined points in the three games prior to the Duke contest.
Manuel Hampered by Foot Injury
The Tar Heels have missed the contributions of freshman starting shooting guard Jackie Manuel (West Palm Beach, Fla.), who has a stress reaction in the third metatarsal bone in his left foot. Manuel missed two games before returning and playing 17 minutes against Duke on Jan. 31. He had one of his better games against the Blue Devils, finishing with five points, five rebounds and three assists in limited action. Two days later at Georgia Tech, Manuel recorded four points and four rebounds.
ecause of the nature of his injury, Manuel actually may not be able to practice for remainder of the season. His availability for games will be made on a game-by-game basis.
Boone Posts First Career Double-Double in Win at Clemson
Sophomore point guard Adam Boone (Minneapolis, Minn.) got more aggressive with the ball offensively and had the best game of his collegiate career on Jan. 27 at Clemson. Boone tallied career highs with 23 points and 10 rebounds for the first double-double as a college player.
oone also had three assists and zero turnovers while running the Tar Heel offense in his 36 minutes of action. His four three-pointers were a career high, as were his seven field goals made and his five free throws made.
His 10 rebounds were the most by a Tar Heel point guard since Ed Cota had 11 versus Stanford on Nov. 27, 1998.
Scott Excels Since Switch to Shooting Guard
Freshman guard Melvin Scott (Baltimore, Md.) has started the last three games (Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech) at shooting guard because of the foot injury to fellow freshman Jackie Manuel. He has responded with some of his best games as a Tar Heel.
Scott, who predominantly played shooting guard in high school before switching to the point as a prep senior, had his best game yet in the victory at Clemson, scoring a season-high 17 points. He hit three three-pointers and grabbed four rebounds against the Tigers. He also took care of the ball, dishing out four assists with just one turnover in 37 minutes of floor time.
Scott scored just two points against Duke on Jan. 31, but two days later at Georgia Tech he scored 13 points, connecting on 3 of 5 thre-pointers.
In his last three games since moving to shooting guard, Scott has scored 32 points (10.7 per game), hit 10 of 20 field goal attempts and hit six three-pointers.
Capel Back in Form
Senior forward Jason Capel (Fayetteville, N.C.) returned to the lineup on Jan. 27 at Clemson after missing the three previous games with a concussion. Capel totaled 15 points and nine rebounds in his first two games back from the injury (vs. Clemson and Duke), but exploded for 21 points and seven rebounds in 37 gritty minutes at Georgia Tech on Feb. 2.
Capel suffered a concussion on Tuesday, January 15, and did not play in games vs. Florida State, Connecticut and NC State. Capel suffered the concussion when he collided with a teammate while diving for a loose ball in practice. The three games were the first Capel has missed since his freshman season, when he missed eight games with a sore back and a case of mononucleosis.
Capel is second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in rebounding with 9.4 per game. Capel also is ninth in the ACC in scoring (15.9 ppg) and sixth in free throw percentage (78.3 percent).
Capel leads the Tar Heels in eight statistical categories - minutes played, free throws, free throw attempts, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, points and scoring average. He is tied for second in assists. No Carolina player has led the team in scoring, rebounding and assists since UNC recorded assist leaders in 1968-69.
The last Carolina player to average a double-double for an entire season was Antawn Jamison, who earned National Player of the Year honors in 1997-98 when he averaged 22.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Prior to Jamison, the last Tar Heel to achieve a double-double for the season was Mitch Kupchak in 1975-76.
Capel, O'Koren and Okulaja
Jason Capel passed the 300-career assist mark on Jan. 12 against Virginia. He is one of only three Tar Heels in history to score 1,000 points, grab 700 rebounds and have 300 assists. Three-time All-America forward Mike O'Koren (1977-80) and first-team All-ACC forward Ademola Okulaja (1996-99) are the others.
Capel has scored 1,312 points, grabbed 743 rebounds and handed out 306 assists. He is 30th all-time in scoring at UNC, 18th in rebounding and 21st in assists.
Mike O'Koren was inducted into the New Jersey Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame on January 27, 2002. He currently is an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets.
Lang Shoulders Offensive Attack
Carolina likes to go inside for its first look and senior Kris Lang (Gastonia, N.C.) has been the primary low-post threat for UNC this season. He leads the team in field goals made with 92. However, Lang has been held to single digits in points in the last two games - eight points vs. Duke and four at Georgia Tech.
Lang is fully recovered from a left knee sprain, an injury he suffered in practice on December 18. Lang, the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder, averaged more than 16 points in Carolina's first five games. After the injury, he missed a pair of games and scored a combined 24 points in three contests. He had just four points in the home loss to Wake Forest.
Williams Leads Tar Heel Freshmen in Scoring
Freshman forward Jawad Williams (Cleveland, Ohio) has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games and eight of the last 11, including a season-high 20 against North Carolina A&T. The Cleveland, Ohio, native is shooting 47.6 percent from the floor this season. He shot 4 for 16 from the field in the first three games, but is 66 for 131 from the floor since (.504).
