Gymnastics Team Qualifies For NCAA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina gymnastics team qualified for the NCAA Southeast Regionals in Morgantown, W.Va. This will be Carolina's first appearance as a team at the NCAA Regionals since 1991. Going into regionals, Carolina is ranked No. 22 in the country.
To qualify for the NCAA Regionals, the Tar Heels captured the East Atlantic Gymnastics League title Saturday night in Towson, Md. by defeating seven universities and setting an EAGL and UNC record with a score of 196.425.
Carolina's 1991 team finished fifth at NCAA regionals with a score of 185.825. For the past 11 years UNC has sent at least two gymnasts to NCAA Regionals as individuals. Seniors Monica Middleton and Lisa Companioni have both competed as individuals at Regionals. Junior Natalie Halbach and sophomore Maddy Curley are also current members of the Tar Heel team that have seen action as individuals at the Southeast Regionals.
Head coach Derek Galvin has coached, including this years team, seven teams and 16 individuals to the NCAA Regionals since he started at Carolina in 1982, also the first year NCAA recognized women's gymnastics.
The Tar Heels will travel to Morgantown, W.Va. to compete against No. 2 Alabama, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 19 West Virginia, No. 20 Kentucky and No. 21 Michigan State on April 6.
