CHAPEL HILL --- Sophomore point guard Adam Boone will transfer from the University of North Carolina after the spring semester. The Minneapolis, Minn., native led the Tar Heels with 89 assists in 28 games last year. He also averaged 7.2 points and 2.2 rebounds and shot a team-high 43.0 percent from three-point range and 81.8 percent from the free throw line.
"I'm sorry to see Adam go," says head coach Matt Doherty. "He made a great deal of improvement last year. I was looking forward to seeing him help reestablish our program over the next two years. I think Adam unfairly received a tremendous amount of criticism from the media, people on the Internet and others. He feels a fresh start would be best for him at this time.
"I understand when you have a coaching transition there is going to be change. I respect those decisions, although it is still disappointing. Even though I didn't recruit Adam to North Carolina, I enjoyed being his coach these two seasons. I wish him the best wherever he decides to enroll."
oone scored a career-high 28 points in Carolina's 95-85 win over Florida State on February 17, 2002, and had 23 points and 10 rebounds in UNC's 87-69 victory at Clemson on January 27, 2002.
