
#4 North Carolina Women's Lacrosse Runs Past #8 Vanderbilt

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The fourth-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team jumped on top of eighth-ranked Vanderbilt 4-0 Friday night and went on to record a resounding 14-6 win over the Commodores before a crowd of 412 fans at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
The win was UNC's fifth in a row since a March 23 loss at Virginia as Carolina improved to 10-2 on the season. The Commodores, who achieved their highest ever ranking of #8 in this week's coaches' poll, saw its five-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 7-3 on the campaign. The Tar Heels were led by senior midfielder Christine McPike who tallied four goals in the game as she continues to improve since breaking her nose in the 11-8 loss at Virginia three weeks ago. Senior midfielder Lindsay Stone added three goals and senior midfielder Kellie Thompson, sophomore attacker Kate Boyle and sophomore attacker Brooke Young added two goals each in a balanced Tar Heel offensive thrust. Jess Roguski was the chief producer offensively for the Commodores as she had two goals, both in the first half.
UNC jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead jusy 6:10 into the game. Stone scored 40 seconds into the match on a tough angle shot that went into the top right shelf. Thompson scored her first goal less than two minutes later as she converted a bounce shot on a free position effort. UNC increased the lead to 4-0 as Young rolled the crease at 5:27 and Stone added another on a high, hard shot at 6:10.
Vandy regrouped to get a goal frm Roguski 7:31 into the half but Young scored with a nifty reverse shot at 9:07 and McPike scored her first goal at 15:58 to make it 6-1 in favor of the Heels. Roguski scored her second of the opening frame at the 21:13 mark but McPike converted off a nifty feed by senior midfielder Laurie Milback to finish the half at 7-2.
The Tar Heels put the game away with a 4-0 run to open the second 30 minutes. Four different players scored goals for UNC as the lead grew to 11-2 at the game's 44:45 mark. Stone and Thompson got the first two goals of the second half and then senior attacker Erin McInnes and McPike scored goals on back-to-back free position shots to put the game away.
The Commodores then went on a 4-2 scoring run as they exhibited their resolve with four different Vandy players denting the scoreboard. Carolina concluded the scoring with 16 seconds left on a free position shot goal by Boyle, her second tally of the game.
Vanderbilt outshot the Tar Heels 23-22 but UNC produced higher quality shots scoring 14 times on Vandy goalie Ashley Bastinelli. She made seven saves. UNC used two goalkeepers with starter Katelyn Hoffman making five saves and backup Margaret Garafalo making two stops. UNC took advantage of its free position shots as Carolina converted on four of eight chances. Vandy failed to score on their six tries.
Carolina's next game will be Sunday at 11th-ranked James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. while Vanderbilt continues its road trip with a game at Davidson Sunday.
