Tar Heels Earn Final Four Berth with 14-13 OT win over Virginia

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Kellie Thompson scored two goals late in regulation to force overtime and Lindsay Stone scored the game-winner with just three seconds left in the first overtime period as the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated Virginia, 14-13, on Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium.
With the victory, the Tar Heels advance to next weekend's NCAA Final Four in Baltimore, Md. Carolina, seeded third overall in the NCAA Tournament, will play second-seeded Princeton on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the second of two semifinal games at Curley Field on the campus of Loyola College. Top-seeded Georgetown will face No. 4 seed Cornell in the opener at 5:30 p.m.
Thompson led all scorers with seven points (5 goals, 2 assists). Stone and Beth Ames both had three goals and one assist for Carolina. Amy Appelt led the Cavaliers with five goals.
Virginia jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first 5:37 of the game before Carolina chipped away and tied it at 4-4 at the 13:14 mark. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way and ended the opening half tied 7-7. Stone, Thompson and Ames each scored two goals for UNC in the opening period, while Lauren Aumiller, Cary Chasney and Appelt had three goals apiece for the Cavs in the first half.
Appelt scored three consecutive goals in a span of 1:36 to give the Cavaliers a 12-10 lead at 41:51. Tar Heel head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy called a quick timeout after Appelt's third goal and Virginia did not score in the remainder of regulation. Thompson scored a pair of goals in the last 12 minutes to force the overtime.
Molly Cangemi of UVa scored with 0:55 remaining in the first of two three-minute overtime periods to give the Cavs a 13-12 lead. It was the only goal Virginia would score in the final 24:09 of the game, as the UNC defense clamped down and the Tar Heels dominated possession of the ball.
Carolina scored two goals in the final 30 seconds of the first overtime period. Thompson tied the score at 13-13 with 0:23 left and Stone scored the game-winner with just 0:03 remaining. UNC won the draw control to start the second three-minute overtime period and maintained possession for the entire three minutes to ice the victory.
The Final Four appearance is the third in Carolina's seven years as a varsity program. The 1997 and '98 Tar Heel squads both reached the Final Four before losing in the semifinals. The win is Carolina's 12th in a row, setting a new school record for longest winning streak (and eclipsing the previous record of 11 set in 1997. Carolina's winning streak began after a March 23 loss at Virginia.
