Former Carolina Golfer Frank Fuhrer, III Honored

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Former University of North Carolina golfer Frank Fuhrer, III was recently honored by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association which has begun a new award to be given annually to the area's outstanding intercollegiate golfer. The WPGA has named this honor the Frank Fuhrer, III Award in recognition of Fuhrer's outstanding golf career in general and his college performance in particular.
Fuhrer played on the 1978-81 North Carolina golf teams. He was a three-time All-America (1979-81) and three-time All-ACC performer (1979-81). He won two tournaments during his collegiate career, the Guilford Intercollegiate in 1979 and the Iron Duke Intercollegiate in 1980. Fuhrer, the #2 ranked amateur by Golf Digest in '81, was selected to the 1981 Walker Cup team which was victorious over the team from Great Britain and Ireland. Other players representing the United States that year were Hal Sutton, Jay Sigel, Corey Pavin, Jodie Mudd, Dick VonTacky, Jim Holtgrieve and Bob Lewis.
Following his collegiate career, Fuhrer played professional golf, including a stint on the PGA Tour. In 1992, he reinstated his amateur status and promptly won the Pennsylvania State Amateur for the second time. He has won 11 events conducted by the WPGA including an Open, Amateur, Mid-Amateur, Junior, Four-Ball, and Fred Brand Foursomes. Fuhrer's club affiliations include Pittsburgh Field Club and Oakmont Country Club. He is currently Vice-President of Frank Fuhrer Wholesalers, a beverage distributor in Pittsburgh.
The first Frank Fuhrer, III Award will be presented this fall at the Association's Players Dinner at a site and date to be named later.
