BALTIMORE, MD. - Junior midfielder Austin Garrison (New Canaan, Conn.) was the sole Tar Heel named to the 2002 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-America teams announced Friday by the USILA All-America Committee chaired by Willie Scroggs, associate director of athletics at UNC.
Garrison had a spectacular year for the Tar Heels and was named an honorable mention All-America in the midfield. Junior tri-captain of a youthful Tar Heel squad, Garrison helped lead UNC to an 8-5 record, the team's best record since going 12-5 in 1996, and a 12th-place finish in the USILA coaches poll, the best poll finish since the 1998 team ranked 10th.
Garrison started all 13 games for the Tar Heels this season in the first midfield unit. He also played as a wing on the faceoffs and played short-stick midfield defense for Carolina. Garrison had 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points for the Tar Heels while also scooping up 34 ground balls.
Garrison had a season-high three goals in Carolina's 9-7 upset win at #5 Duke on March 20 and a season-high four points against Delaware (two goals, two assists). His three assists in UNC's 11-10 six overtime win over Navy on March 2 set a new career high for assists in a game. His season high in ground balls was seven against Bucknell.
