COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Scott Autrey pitched a complete game two-hitter as North Carolina beat James Madison 5-0 on Friday in the first round of the NCAA regional tournament here at Sarge Frye Field in Columbia.
Autrey (5-3) held one of the nation's top run-producing teams scoreless with six strikeouts. He had retired 13 straight batters until Jason Cushman reached on an error in the ninth inning. James Madison (43-15) had been averaging almost nine runs a game.
"We're very happy to have won," said UNC head coach Mike Fox. "Scott (Autrey) was outstanding today. This is one of his best outings if not the best of the year. I thought JMU was outstanding as well, they just couldn't seem to do much with Scott on the mound. You never know what to expect in this game."
Ron Braun led the Tar Heels' (41-19) offense going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. His homer began a sixth-inning rally that ended with Sean Farrell's two-run double that put North Carolina up 5-0. Farrell finished 2-for-4.
"Our team struggled the first time around against (Jared) Doyle, but after that we seemed to settle down," Braun said. "I was looking for something off-speed, and the first pitch he gave me a change-up down and in and I just got it, I got a real good piece of it."
Russ Adams's single to center field put the Tar Heels up 1-0 in the bottom of the third.
Starter Jared Doyle (11-3) was twice able to pitch out of trouble in the middle innings but suffered the loss. He got two strikeouts in the fourth with two men on base then struck out the side in the fifth, leaving the bases loaded.
James Madison was playing without pitcher John Gouzd and infielder Brent Metheny who were suspended for alcohol-related arrests earlier this week. Metheny is expected to play Saturday, but Gouzd, who has been charged with drunken driving, will not play in the regional, coach Spanky MacFarland said.
Carolina advances to face top-seeded South Carolina Saturday at 3 p.m. Daniel Moore is slated to start for the Tar Heels.
Notes: Scott Autrey's complete game was the fourth of the season by a Tar Heel pitcher ... Garry Bakker and Scott Manshack each pitched complete-game shutouts, while Daniel Moore allowed one run in going the distance at Georgia Tech on May 24 ... Mike Fox is just one victory shy of his 700th career victory in 19 years as a head coach ... Chris Maples extended his hit streak to 21 games with a double against JMU.
