Cleveland, Benson Named Cape League All-Stars

North Carolina rising juniors Whitley Benson and Jeremy Cleveland have been selected to the East Division All-Star team in the Cape Cod Baseball League, the premier amateur summer baseball league since 1885. The game will be played on July 27 at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
enson is 1-0 with a 1.61 ERA and six saves to help lead the Orleans Cardinals to a East Division-leading 23-11 record. Benson has 25 strikeouts and just six walks in 22.1 innings. Cleveland leads the Chatham A's with a .267 batting average in the prestigious wooden bat league. He also has eight doubles and two home runs in 34 games.
Chris Iannetta and Daniel Moore are also playing for Chatham this summer, with Iannetta batting .195 in 26 games and Moore compiling a 1-5 record with a 3.89 ERA in seven appearances for the 12-20 A's. Garry Bakker is 3-1 with a 4.66 ERA in five appearances for the West Division-leading Cotuit Kettleers.
Meanwhile, Paul Jenkins (Wilson Tobs), Michael Gross (Wilson Tobs), Greg Mangum (Gastonia Grizzlies) Scott Manshack (Gastonia Grizzlies), Mell Adams (Wilmington Sharks), Justin Webb (Wilmington Sharks), Wes Moyer (Outer Banks Daredevils) and Bryan Phillips (Outer Banks Daredevils) are all playing in the Coastal Plain League, a wooden bat league based exclusively in the Carolinas and Virginia.
Last year's CPL All-Star game MVP, Moyer is batting .341 with three home runs and 17 RBIs in 31 games for Outer Banks. Other UNC highlights from the league include Mangum, a rising sophomore who is batting .273 with two doubles, two triples and one homer in 25 games and Manshack, who is 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA in seven appearances. Gross has made 11 appearances with Wilson, striking out 24 and walking just four in 20.2 innings while compiling a 1.74 ERA.
