ACC 50 Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Announced

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Eleven University of North Carolina men's track and field athletes have been voted onto the list of the 50 greatest Atlantic Coast Conference women's swimmers and divers of all time, announced Wednesday by the ACC Office in Greensboro. UNC's representatives date back to national champion Ann Marshall who began her swimming career at Carolina in 1976 and extending to current Tar Heel junior Jessi Perruquet, a first-team All-America and school record holder in the 200-yard freestyle. Amongst the honorees are Sue Walsh, an 11-time national collegiate champion swimmer at UNC in the early 1980s, individual national champions from the 1970s like Ann Marshall and Bonny Brown, relay champions from the 1980s like Amy Pless and Cami Berizzi and 1982 NCAA butterfly titlist Barb Harris. A whole host of other All-Americas, school record and ACC record holders are included on the list of 22 individuals. Complete bios of the 22 selection can be found at the end of this release.
"I could not be prouder of the 22 swimmers who have been named to this team," said Frank Comfort, the head coach at North Carolina since 1977. and coach of all 22 swimmers on the list. "I think it is indicative of the fact we have won 15 of the 24 ACC championships in history and all reflective of the amazing number of women's swimmers we have been fortunate to recruit to Carolina who have gone on to be great in the pool and great in the classroom. It is an amazing honor to have coached so many spectacular representatives of UNC." As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the ACC is recognizing the all-time greatest athletes in conference history. Teams will be announced through August and September.

Jim Beatty (1954-56) All-America for the two miles in 1955 and 1957 and for the 5,000 meters in 1956 ... ACC champion in the mile in 1955 and 1956 ... Won the James A. Sullivan award as the nation's top amateur athlete in 1962, the same year he set world records for the mile, two miles, 1,500m and 5,000m.
Eric Bishop (1996-98) 1996 NCAA champion in the outdoor high jump ... All-America in the outdoor high jump in 1996 ... ACC champion in the outdoor high jump1997.
Milton Campbell (1995-98) Member of the 1995 NCAA champion 4x100-meter relay team ... 1995 All-America 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams ...1996 & 1997 All-America in the 400 meters ... 1997 All-America on the 4x400-meters ... 1998 All-America in the 400 ...1995 ACC champion 4x100 team ... ACC champion 400m in 1995, 1997 and 1998, setting the ACC meet record in 1998.
Allen Johnson (1990-93) All-America in the 110-meter hurdles in 1992 and 1993 ... 1991 ACC champion in the long jump and the 110-meter hurdles in 1993...1996 Olympic gold medallist in the 110m hurdles ... 1995, 1997, 2001 world champion in the 110-meter ... 1995 World champion in the 60m hurdles.
Ralph King -- All-America in the mile in 1976 and for the two miles and the 5,000 meters in 1978 ... In 1976, '77 and '78, King was the ACC champion in the mile.
Reggie McAfee (1970-73) 1973 All-America in the mile ... ACC mile champion in 1972 and '73 ... Holds the UNC outdoor record for the 800 meters and is second in UNC history in the 200 meters; 400 meters; 1,500 meters; the mile; and 3,000 meters.
Tony McCall -- All-America as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team in 1995 and for the 55 meters in 1995 and '96 ... Member of the 1995 4x400 team that won the NCAA championship ... ACC champion of the 55 meters in 1997.
