UNC took an early hit when junior defender Catherine Reddick was red carded just 3:40 into the match for taking down Marquette's Kate Gordon from behind in the penalty area. Marquette's Anne Delecky converted the penalty kick to the left of UNC goalkeeper Aly Winget to give the Golden Eagles a lead they would hold onto for more than 55 minutes. It was Dalecky's first goal of the season.

UNC came out and dominated the second half, outshooting Marquette 15-7. The Golden Eagles were still able to get good chances but Winget really came up big for UNC with seven saves.
Carolina also started to convert their chances in the second half. In the 59th minute, UNC junior defender Elizabeth Ball was fouled just outside the Marquette penalty area. Just 22 seconds after Bush's goal, UNC scored again as McDowell took a pass from freshman forward Lindsay Tarpley and buried a shot far post from 25 yards out for the eventual game winner.
UNC went on to add two insurance goals. At 75:40, Felts scored her second goal of the season, going lower right shelf from 15 yards out. Bush pushed end line and sent the ball into the box where junior forward Alyssa Ramsey's flicked it back to Felts who was open two steps inside the penalty area.
