DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina women's soccer team employed a hat trick by freshman forward Lindsay Tarpley on her 19th birthday to power past Florida International 6-0 in the Duke adidas Classic at Koskinen Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Tarpley, born September 22, 1983 in Madison, Wis., scored three goals, giving her eight on the season in the six games she has played in. She became the first Tar Heel freshman to record a hat trick since Meredith Florance had three goals in an 8-0 victory over Tennessee at Fetzer Field on September 5, 1997.
Carolina, the consensus #1 team in the country, improved to 7-0-1 on the season while FIU fell to 0-7-1. Carolina travels next weekend to play at Portland Saturday and at Oregon Sunday. UNC beat the Pilots 2-1 in last year's NCAA semifinals while Oregon is coached by former UNC assistant coach Bill Steffen while former Tar Heel player Keri Sanchez serves as the Ducks' assistant coach.
Carolina dominated Sunday's game as it outshot FIU 31-5 and had 18 corner kicks to two for the Golden Panthers. The score would have been worse were it not for the 12-save effort of FIU goalkeeper Adrienne McWilliams.
Tarpley got the Tar Heels on the board early as she scored twice in the first 14 minutes. At 4:03 she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Anne Felts and blasted the ball from 22 yards out into the lower left shelf. At 13:12, Tarpley scored again on a shot in the box with assists to freshman midfielder Lori Chalupny and senior striker Susan Bush.
UNC kept the pressure on and at 16:48 junior forward Alyssa Ramsey scored her seventh goal of the season on a seven-yard shot with Chalupny and sophomore midfielder Mary McDowell earning assists. Carolina would score once more before halftime as Felts intercepted an FIU clearance and one touched the ball from 25 yards out top shelf.
The Tar Heels substituted liberally in the second half but scored twice more anyway. Tarpley achieved the hat trick at 54:18 on a one touch in the box with assists to Bush and junior defender Carmen Watley. Freshman forward Brynn Hardman finished off the scoring for UNC with her first career goal at 75:14, taking a throw in by sophomore forward Anne Morrell and going top shelf from 25 yards out.
