
Tar Heel Women's Soccer Team Blanks Oregon

EUGENE, ORE. - #1-ranked North Carolina got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon as starting forwards Anne Morrell, Alyssa Ramsey and Lindsay Tarpley scored goals in the Tar Heels' 3-0 victory over the University of Oregon at Pape' Field. A Pape' Field record crowd of 1,588 fans was in attendance.
UNC, which battled to a double overtime scoreless tie against Portland on Saturday, improved to 8-0-2 with the victory while the Ducks, coached by former Tar Heel assistant coach Bill Steffen, fell to 1-5-1 on the campaign.
Carolina dominated the game throughout by outshooting the Ducks 28-3 with two of Oregon's three shots coming in the last 10 minutes of play. UNC sophomore goalkeeper Aly Winget improved her record to 6-0-1 this season and she posted her second successive solo shutout for the Tar Heels.
UNC got on the board in the 11th minute of play on a goal by sophomore forward Anne Morrell. Freshman midfielder Lori Chalupny served a ball into the box fromt he left side to Morrell who tapped the ball in from five yards out.
Oregon's defense held stout for the next 52 plus minutes before finally breaking under Carolina's constant offensive pressure. At 62:46, sophomore forward Lindsay Tarpley thred a through ball up the middle of the field and junior striker Alyssa Ramsey ran on to the ball, dribbled in and scored past Oregon goalkeeper Sarah Peters.
Less than a minute later Tarpley scored a goal of her own as she drove a 25-yard line drive shot into the goal from the left side of the pitch.
UNC also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks and Peters prevented the result from being more lopsided as she made 10 saves in goal for the Ducks.
Carolina will face its toughest challenge of the season next Friday when the Tar Heels travel once again to the West Coast. After returning to Chapel Hill early Monday morning the Heels will jet out again to the West Coast on Thursday and they will play in the St. Mary's Fall Classic at Moraga, Calif. on Friday and Sunday. Carolina will take on the second-ranked Stanford Cardinal, undefeated and untied, at 5 p.m. EDT on Friday and the host Gaels of St. Mary's on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. EDT.
