#1 Tar Heels Open Home Season With Victory Over Guilford

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-ranked North Carolina got goals from six different players Friday night as the UNC women's soccer team won its home opener Friday night by a 9-0 score over Guilford. The game was the nightcap in the Carolina Nike Classic. #15 Washington won the opener, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to beat #22 Duke 4-3 in overtime in the first game.
Carolina got two goals each from junior forward Alyssa Ramsey, sophomore midfielder Mary McDowell and freshman forward Lindsay Tarpley to lead the charge against the Quakers. UNC busted out to an 8-0 halftime lead before coasting to the victory.
Carolina outshot the Quakers 36-2 as UNC improved to 2-0-1 on the season. Guilford fell to 0-2 on the campaign.
Five goals in the first 20 minutes of action powered the Tar Heels to the win. The five goals all came in a period of 10:21. Ramsey opened the scoring on a one touch goal from six yards out at 7:59, assisted by sophomore forward Anne Felts and freshman midfielder Kacey White. Just 1:29 later, UNC boosted the lead to 2-0 as Ramsey served a ball into the box where McDowell scored the first of her two goals on a header from 10 yards out. At 12:48, Ramsey scored her third goal of the season and second of the game on a one touch from three yards out with assists from senior forward Susan Bush and McDowell.
McDowell scored her second goal of the game, again on a header, at 16:57 with Felts providing the cross that led to the goal. Then at 18:20, Bush scored his first goal of the season on a shot from six yards with Ramsey providing the assist.
Tarpley, a freshman playing in her first college game, scored the next two goals for UNC. At 27:19, the Michigan native scored on a header in the box with freshman midfielder Corinne Black and sophomore Catherine Reddick getting assists. Then at 35:34, Tarpley finished a play in the box off a looping assist by sophomore midfielder Sophie Gervais. It was the first career point for Gervais.
ut before the half was out Gervais, a Chapel Hill native, would score her first career goal as Black assisted on the play for her second point of the half.
UNC's only scoring in the second half came at the 60:16 mark as senior defender Leslie Gaston headed in a corner kick by freshman midfielder Lori Chalupny.
In the first match on Friday, Duke appeared headed to victory after a pair of goals in the first 27 minutes of play but Washington rallied to score four of the last five goals of the match. Duke's early goals came by Gwendolyn Oxenham and Liz Wagner but Blair Ruport's unassisted goal before halftime got the Huskies to within one goal.
Washington took advantage early in the second half to score two goals in a span of less than three minutes to go ahead in the 63rd minute by 3-2. Melissa Bennett had the first of the goals followed by a nifty top shelf goal by Tina Frimpong.
Duke forced overtime as Carolyn Ford scored on a rebound in the 81st minute. But Washington prevailed in the 106th minute as Nicole Martinez scored the golden goal off Bennett's corner kick.
The Carolina Nike Classic continues on Sunday at Fetzer Field with #1 North Carolina hosting #15 Washington (3-0) at 1 p.m. while #22 Duke (1-2) will meet Wofford at 3 p.m.
