Tipoff: No. 8 UNC travels to Clemson, Jan. 16
The University of North Carolina women's basketball team (14-1, 4-0 ACC) travels to Clemson, S.C., for a Thursday evening matchup with Clemson (10-4, 2-1 ACC). Tipoff is 7 p.m. at newly-renovated Littlejohn Coliseum.
The Tar Heels are ranked eighth in this week's Associated Press poll, 10th in the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll. Clemson is not ranked, but is receiving votes in the coaches' poll.
Next up for UNC is an ACC home game against top-ranked Duke. The Tar Heels host the Blue Devils Monday at noon in a game that will be televised nationally by ESPN2.

Thursday's game will be broadcast live by the Tar Heel Radio Network. The flagship station is 1360-AM WCHL. Stephen Gates is Carolina's play-by-play announcer. Game action also is available via the internet at www.TarHeelBlue.com.

News of note
* UNC's 14-1 start is the team's best since 1998-99, when the Tar Heels opened the season 17-1.
* Carolina leads the series with Clemson 35-26.
* The Tar Heel roster includes two players from the state of North Carolina: sophomore Kenya McBee is from Greenville (about 45 minutes from Clemson) and freshman La'Tangela Atkinson is from Bishopville (three hours from Clemson).
* North Carolina's ranking of eighth in this week's Associated Press poll is the team's highest since Nov. 15, 1999, when the Tar Heels were No. 8 in the first week of the 1999-2000 season.
* Senior guard Coretta Brown is coming off a 28-point performance at Florida State, where she played in front of a group of 30 friends and family members who had chartered a bus for the trip down from Statesboro, Ga. Brown's scoring total included five three-pointers and equaled her career high.
* Freshman La'Tangela Atkinson is the reigning ACC Rookie of the Week after averaging 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds off the bench in a pair of wins last week. The honor is her third of the season.

Scouting the Clemson Lady Tigers
Clemson is 10-4 on the season and 2-1 in conference play following a 70-59 win at Maryland last Thursday. The Lady Tigers have had a week-long break leading up to the game against UNC.
Against Maryland, Chrissy Floyd led Clemson with 20 points and was the only Lady Tiger to score in double figures. She hit 10 of her 19 shots and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in 37 minutes of play.
On the season, Floyd averages 17.6 points per game, more than double any of her teammates. Lakeia Stokes and Julie Aderhold average 8.3 each and three other players average more than six points per game. Amanda White leads Clemson in rebounding with 7.8 per game.
The Lady Tigers are coached by Jim Davis, who is 326-154 in his 16th season with the program.
The North Carolina-Clemson series
Thursday's game is the 62nd meeting between UNC and Clemson in a series that dates back to the 1975-76 season, Carolina's second year as a varsity program. The Tar Heels lead the series 35-26 and have won five of the last six matchups, including both of last year's.
Clemson's last win in the series was 75-57 in the 2001 ACC Tournament. The Lady Tigers last beat UNC in Clemson on Feb. 10, 2000, when they won 69-65.

With starting center Candace Sutton sidelined with a sprained ankle, Kenya McBee made the first start of her career and turned in a double double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Coretta Brown led all scorers with 26 points and hit six three-pointers as the Tar Heels totaled 13, one shy of a school record. Nikki Teasley scored 20 points and led UNC with six assists.
Five Clemson players scored in double figures led by Chrissy Floyd's 19.
No. 22 UNC 86, Clemson 76
(Feb. 14, 2002, at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill)
All five Carolina starters scored in double figures to give the Tar Heels a victory after trailing 37-35 at halftime. UNC shot just 39.3 percent for the game to 49.2 by Clemson, but Carolina won the rebounding battle 41-34, 18-10 on the offensive boards.
Coretta Brown led UNC with 18 points on six three-pointers, the same season-high long-range total she reached in the first matchup against CU. Candace Sutton scored 16 points. Chrissy Floyd led Clemson with 24.
