With 207 yards on 27-of-40 passing today UNC quarterback Darian Durant surpassed Ronald Curry as the Tar Heels' all-time leading passer. His 19-yard completion to Jesse Holley in the second quarter sealed the record. Durant now has thrown for 5,096 yards for his career, eclipsing Curry's total of 4,987 yards established from 1998-2001. He is the first 5,000-yard passer in Carolina history. Durant also tops Carolina's all-time charts for touchdown passes (40) and pass completions (402). Also the Tar Heels leading rusher on the season, Durant had his third rushing score of the season in the fourth quarter.
Freshman linebacker Larry Edwards made his first career start Saturday at the Will linebacker position and made an immediate impact, recovering a fumble on Virginia's opening drive and also dropping Cavalier running back Wali Lundy for a five-yard loss on a key third down play in the first quarter. He joined classmate Melik Brown as rookie starters in the Tar Heel linebacker corps. Carolina has played 12 true freshmen this season.
Dan Orner's 50-yard field goal in the first quarter was the fifth 50-yarder of his career, a Carolina record. His kick capped an 8:06 scoring drive, the longest drive of the season for the Tar Heels in terms of time. With Orner's kick, UNC has now scored first in each of its last four outings.
The Tar Heels' opening quarter shutout of UVa marked the first quarter that Carolina kept an opponent off the scoreboard since the final frame of the 37-0 loss to Florida State on Aug. 30.
Tailback Jacque Lewis has become quite a weapon out of the Tar Heel backfield. After a career-high 85 yards receiving last week against NC State, Lewis made 6 grabs for 52 yards against Virginia.
Freshman wide receiver Jesse Holley had career-highs of three catches for 43 yards against Virginia. The grabs were the first non-touchdown catches of his UNC career, as he entered Saturday with two catches and two touchdowns on the season.
After missing the Syracuse and Wisconsin games and making just one catch for five yards last week against NC State, senior tight end Bobby Blizzard rebounded Saturday with a season-high four catches for 27 yards.
