Carolina Falls To No. 5 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of North Carolina softball team fell to fifth-ranked Texas, 7-0, in the fourth game of the Time Warner Texas Invitational played at McCombs Field. The Tar Heels fell behind early as Texas scored four runs on no hits in the first two innings and UNC could not recover. UT improves to 17-1, 1-1 at the tournament, while UNC falls to 8-7 on the season and 0-2 at the tourney.
Carolina continued to hurt themselves on defense in game two as the Longhorns put runners on second and third with no outs in the first inning without a hit. Texas scored both runs on a fielder's choice as they jumped ahead of the Tar Heels 2-0. UNC junior short stop Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) cut down a Longhorn at home plate to keep the score 2-0 as Carolina gave up two runs on no hits in the first inning.
Texas began the second inning with two consecutive walks to put Longhorns at first and second. UNC freshman pitcher Alison Yin (Glendale, Calif.) entered the game for the Tar Heels replacing sophomore Brandi Griffin (Wilmington, N.C.). UT scored two more runs after a sacrifice on another fielder's choice to take a 4-0 lead.
Carolina fell behind by five runs as the Longhorns' Tina Boutelle hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Tar Heels trailed 5-0. Texas added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Wynter Turner doubled to center field to collect two RBIs as UT downed UNC 7-0.
Griffin dropped to 0-2 on the season, pitching one inning, allowing four runs, two earned runs, three walks and one strikeout.
North Carolina scored no runs, on no hits and two errors, while Texas scored seven runs, on seven hits and no errors.
UT's Amy Bradford threw her first no-hitter of her career to improve to 3-0. Bradford struck out 13 Tar Heels in her complete game shutout.
Carolina will face No. 19 Michigan at Noon CST tomorrow afternoon. The Tar Heels and Wolverines will face each other in bracket play too at 7 p.m. CST.
