GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Paul Spellman was named ACC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week Monday.
Spellman, a goalkeeper from Cockeysville, Md., had 32 saves in two games as the Tar Heels had their best week of lacrosse in seven years with wins over No. 8 Duke (14-9) and No. 2 Maryland (10-6).
The sophomore was particularly spectacular against the Terrapins as he had a career high 25 saves, including 18 in the second half when he stopped 18 of 22 shots on goal. The win over Maryland was Carolina's first since 1996 and the two wins gave the Tar Heels a pair of ACC wins in the same season for the first time since 1996. The victory over the Terrapins also marked the highest ranked team beaten by UNC since April 14, 1999.
Up next for the Tar Heels is a non-conference match-up with John Hopkins in Chapel Hill Saturday, March 29 at 1:00 pm.
