Gymnastics Team Places Second At Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD. -- North Carolina suffered a disappointing loss to host Maryland Saturday (196.025-194.925) but still managed to edge out George Washington (193.675) and Pennsylvania (188.200). The Tar Heels' record improves to 19-2 as they prepare to take on nearby Towson on Tues., March 11.
Carolina finished on the uneven bars, the best event of the night, with a 49.175. Sophomore Olivia Trusty took second place with a score of 9.875. She was followed by freshman Courtney Bumpers and senior Fritzie Cathcart who ended up in a four-way tie for fourth place with a 9.850. Junior Maddy Curley trailed close behind, posting a 9.825.
umpers earned her first vault title, placing first with a 9.875. Trusty and sophomore Amy Williams tied for second place on vault with a score of 9.825. Freshman Mikel Hester followed on the event, scoring a 9.800.
umpers led the Tar Heels on the balance beam with her score of 9.800. Junior Anna Wilson's 9.875 on the floor exercise tied her for first place.
umpers placed fourth in the all-around competition with a 38.875. Hester earned a career-high of 38.800 to finish fifth in her second time ever competing as an all-arounder. Wilson followed in sixth place.
The Tar Heels will remain in the state of Maryland until Tuesday when they will face Towson University at Towson. The competition will take place at 7 p.m.
