Fortino Named All-ACC

GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of North Carolina senior defender Andy Fortino was named to the 12-member 2003 All-Atlantic Coast Conference women's lacrosse team, the ACC announced on Thursday.
Fortino, a two-time All-America and a strong candidate to earn those honors for a third straight year, is a defender from Medford, N.J. She is a third-year starter who has started 55 games in a row entering the 2003 ACC Tournament. This season, she is third in the ACC in ground balls (39) and fourth in caused turnovers (26).
The team was selected by a vote of the league's four head coaches and was headed up by Maryland and Virginia, who each placed four athletes on the squad. Also among the honorees are three players from Duke and one from North Carolina.
Kelly Coppedge is the fifth Maryland player to be named ACC Player of the Year in the seven-year history of the award. The Annaplois, Md., native is a two-time ACC Player of the Week selection this season and ranks third in the NCAA in points (4.5 pg) and fifth in goals (3.4 pg). The junior has led Maryland to the No. 1 seed in the 2003 ACC Championship, after the Terrapins entered last year's Championship as the No. 4 seed.
Duke's Katie Chrest was named this year's ACC Rookie of the Year, after leading the Blue Devils to an 11-2 record this season.
The Hampstead, Md., product leads the team in assists and points and ranks second in goals. Chrest has scored at least one goal in 11 of 13 contests and has recorded nine multi-goal games and four games with multiple assists.
Cindy Timchal has been named this year's ACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in the seven years the award has been presented. She led Maryland to a 13-1 record and 3-0 mark in the league this season, with all but two of her wins coming against ranked opponents. Timchal owns a career record of 216-23 in her 13 seasons at Maryland and needs just eight wins to reach 300 for her career.
