So you're watching the latest Tar Heel hoops game with your buddies, and there's that one guy who always has to throw out random stats. Frankly, you're getting a little tired of it. We want to arm you to fight back. In our new feature, Tuesday Talking Points, we're going to provide a mix of stats and background--unfiltered, with no opinions or analysis, since we'll let you provide those--on the Carolina players that you might not have known. Hopefully, you'll be able to throw out at least one of these the next time you watch a game. If you enjoy this feature, let us know and we'll try to make it at least a semi-regular part of the site. If not, we'll store it in the basement with the interlocking "NC" basketball uniforms.
If Jackie Manuel maintains his current field goal shooting pace, he will have one of the ten best field goal percentage seasons in Tar Heel history.
Melvin Scott played one year of tennis as a high school senior and went undefeated during the regular season.
The broken nose suffered by Jawad Williams Sunday night is the second of his career. As a high school senior, he broke his nose during the McDonald's All-American game, which was played in Durham's Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Raymond Felton has 100 assists this season. If he maintains that pace and Carolina makes a reasonable NCAA Tournament run, he could challenge Ed Cota's single-season Tar Heel record of 284 assists. Felton's 236 assists last year was the fourth-best single-season mark in UNC history.
Melvin Scott's nickname is Pelle (pronounced Pel-lee), Damion Grant's is Debo, Jackie Manuel's is Swayzie, and Damien Price's is Tubb.
In 1998, Antawn Jamison became the first Tar Heel in over 20 years to average a double-double for an entire season. Sean May, who is currently averaging a double-double, has a chance to become just the 14th Carolina player to pull that feat.
The Heels have four 100-point games already this season, which ties them with the 1994-95 squad. The most 100-point games in school history belongs to the 1992-93 team, which broke the century mark in a remarkable nine out of 38 contests. Carolina's 89.0 per game scoring average would rank them fourth in school history, a category led by the 1986-87 team's 91.3 points per game.
Rashad McCants was cut from his eighth-grade basketball team.
