WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of North Carolina's second-ranked women's soccer team broke a scoreless halftime tie with goals by Heather O'Reilly, Amy Steadman and Anne Morrell as the second-ranked Tar Heels defeated 21st-ranked Wake Forest 3-0 Wednesday night at Spry Soccer Stadium. With the win the Tar Heels remained unbeaten over the last two seasons and improved to 13-0-1 in 2004. Carolina is a perfect 6-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season.
Despite holding UNC to only four shots in the first half, Wake Forest could not stop the Tar Heels offensively in the second period as Carolina outshot the Demon Deacons 11-3 in the second 45 minutes of the match. Carolina eventually broke through to score with 35:24 remaining in the match as Lori Chalupny crossed a ball from the left corner that Heather O'Reilly ran on to at the far post. O'Reilly's shot evaded Wake Forest goalkeeper Heather Currie, who had four saves on the night, giving the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead. It was O'Reilly's ninth goal of the season and her second game-winning goal of the season.
Carolina increased its lead to 2-0 with less than 15 minutes remaining in the match when defender Amy Steadman, a sophomore from Brevard, N.C., scored when her shot hit the post and caromed after a UNC corner kick. It was Steadman's first goal of the season and her first goal since she scored a pair in UNC's 5-2 win over UCLA in the regular season in 2003.
The Tar Heels finished off the scoring l:01 later as Anne Morrell scored her third goal of the season, assisted by sophomore forward Elizabeth Guess.
UNC outshot the Demon Deacons (8-5-1 overall, ACC 2-4) on the match, 15-6. UNC had four corner kicks in the match while the Demon Deacons had one. Aly Winget made two saves and recorded her sixth solo shutout of the season for Carolina.
Carolina will be back in action again when the Tar Heels play host to No. 4 Virginia next Sunday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The Cavaliers come to Fetzer with a record of 11-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the ACC. Wake Forest will host Maryland Saturday at 7 p.m. at Spry Soccer Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
