CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a defensive struggle that saw both teams record a season-low number of shots, second-ranked North Carolina edged fourth-ranked Virginia 2-1 in women's soccer action before 3,122 fans at Fetzer Field Sunday afternoon. The Carolina win clinched no worse than a tie for the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season championship for the Tar Heels who improved to 14-0-1 overall and 7-0-0 in the league.
Carolina managed only eight shots and Virginia six shots as both defenses were stellar at limiting good scoring chances. UNC broke through to score in the 35th minute of the match on a nifty series of passes that resulted in an empty net goal by senior midfielder Sara Randolph, her first goal of the season. Junior midfielder Lori Chalupny threaded a ball through the Virginia defense to junior midfielder Kacey White on the right side of the box. White sent a cross to the far post that Randolph ran on to umarked, finishing into the unguarded net.
UNC head coach Anson Dorrance was able to keep his troops fresh as he used six substitutes in the first half to only two for Virginia (11-2-1, ACC 3-2-1). UNC broke through early in the second half to make the score 2-0 on Chalupny's fifth goal of the season. Senior midfielder Anne Felts started the scoring sequence for UNC from about 40 yards away as she sent a pass to the top of the box where it was corralled by Anne Morrell. Morrell was surrounded by several Virginia defenders but she was able to keep control and eventually found Chalupny streaking down the middle. Chalupny split the Cavalier's defense and finished past Christina de Vries from the 12-yard line. North Carolina did not hold on to the two-goal lead for long. At 60:04 of the match, Virginia cut the lead to 2-1 on a spectacular header by Jamie Fabrizio off a corner kick by Sarah Huffman. Huffman sent the corner kick from the left side on a rope to the far post where the unmarked Fabrizio buried her header into the upper right 90.
With 29:56 left to play after the Virginia goal, the rest of the match became a war of attrition in the midfield. Both teams created some chances to score but only one more actual shot was taken the rest of the way, by UNC's Elizabeth Guess and it was blocked in the box by a Cavalier defender.
The Tar Heels will return to action when they play No. 17 Florida State on Friday at 7 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles are coming off a 3-2 win over NC State Sunday in Raleigh. The No. 4 Cavaliers return to the pitch to play Virginia Tech Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The Hokies were beaten by No. 16 Duke 9-3 Sunday in Durham.
