Tar Heel Martin Ureta Wins Duke Golf Classic After Four Hole Playoff

DURHAM, N.C. - Tar Heel sophomore Martin Ureta shot a 66 on the final round of play and went on to win the Duke Golf Classic after nailing a birdie putt in a playoff that needed four extra holes. Ureta played along with Ryan Blaum and Michael Quagliano of Duke and Matt Harmon of Michigan State in the playoff. Ureta and Blaum each had a birdie on the first playoff hole, while Quagliano and Harmon each had a par. Finally, on the fourth extra hole, Ureta edged off Blaum with his birdie putt. All four golfers who were in the playoff were six under par. Carolina's Matt Crenshaw finished in a lone fifth place at three under par.
As a team, Carolina shot a 281 on the final round of play, matching Duke, the tournament's champion. Duke finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of four under par, while Carolina's final score tallied up to nine over par. Washington and Michigan State each were 12 over par for the tournament, while Furman rounded out the top five finishing at 19 over par.
UNC's Jonathan Jackson finished with a 220, third best on the team, and good enough for 13th place in the tournament. Barden Berry's 70 in the final round put him at seven over for the tournament, placing him in 25th.
Carolina's men's golfers will be at it again next week as they head to Windermere, Florida for the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational over the 25th and 26th.
