The UNC women's basketball team opened practice for the 2004-05 season Sunday evening with a much-anticipated workout at Carmichael Auditorium. Instead of beginning on Saturday as NCAA rules allow, the players had several days off during fall break before returning to campus to officially start preparations for the coming year.
The season opens in just over a month, with the Tar Heels hosting Elon at Carmichael Auditorium on Nov. 19. In the meantime, Carolina will warm up with two exhibition games, against EA Sports on Nov. 4 and Athletes in Action on Nov. 16.
UNC head coach Sylvia Hatchell, who is heading into her 19th season at Carolina and her 30th as a collegiate head coach, has high hopes for this year's squad. "We're very athletic and we have a lot of players that can play a lot of positions," she said. " We'll play an up-tempo, fast-breaking style and we have good depth to do that."
The Tar Heels return all but one starter, center Candace Sutton, from last year's 24-7 squad. Sophomores Camille Little and Ivory Latta, the team's leading scorers last season, are both preseason candidates for the 2005 Wade Trophy, awarded to the National Player of the Year.
