Martin Ureta Named Hardee's Carolina Student-Athlete of the Week

Martin Ureta won the Duke Golf Classic by winning a four-man playoff on the fourth hole and is the Hardees Carolina Student-Athlete of the Week for October 18-24, 2004. Ureta, a sophomore from Santiago, Cile, was tied with three other players, Duke's Ryan Blaum and Michael Quagliano and Michigan State's Matt Harmon, at the conclusion of regulation play. All had fired a 54-hole total of six-under-par 210. On the first playoff hole Quagliano and Harmon carded pars while Ureta and Blaum both posted birdie threes to advance on to the next hole. Finally on the fourth playoff hole, Ureta captured the title after firing another birdie.
The Tar Heels conclude their fall season Oct. 25-26 at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla.

Senior midfielder Laura Douglas scored the winning goal in overtime as UNC beat Maryland 2-1 Saturday to finish Atlantic Coast Conference play 4-0 and earn the top seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament. In College Park, Md., the Tar Heels trailed 1-0 at halftime but tied the score early in the second half. Douglas's goal, assisted by Rachel Dawson, came with just over three minutes to play in the first sudden-death overtime period. On the season, Douglas leads the team in assists with 11 and has four goals. With 19 points, she ranks third on the team in scoring.

Heather O'Reilly figured in all four goals as the No. 2 North Carolina women's soccer team clinched the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer regular season championship outright with a 4-0 win over No. 14 Florida State. O'Reilly, a sophomore from East Brunswick, N.J., assisted on Carolina's only goal of the first half and then she went on to score Carolina's second and third goals before assisting on the final tally. UNC's win clinched the Tar Heels the top seed in the 2004 ACC Tournament as UNC improved to 8-0 in the ACC and 15-0-1 overall.
MEN'S SOCCER

Merritt guided the Tar Heels to a 2-0 week, which included conference wins over Virginia Tech and NC State. In addition to leading a Carolina defense that surrendered only one goal on the week, Merritt scored the eventual game-winner against the Wolfpack and added an assist versus the Hokies. The Tar Heels have posted four consecutive victories and have won five of their last six, outscoring their opponents 12-3 over this run. Merritt has been a big part of Carolina's success of late, as he is now tied for third on the team with 10 points on three goals and four assists.
