I've always liked exploring new things and finding out about new things. When I was growing up, my dad taught me a lot about cars, and I've got an old car at home that I have spent a lot of time on.
In a way, that's kind of similar to my major, Information Science. It appeals to me because I like to figure out how things work. It's funny, because before I came to Carolina I never had much of an interest in computers. We really didn't have much of a need for them. But here, everybody has a computer and you're on them all the time. That's the way the future is going. My older sister, Angela Sanders, is a computer engineer, so it was natural that I'd follow her lead.
Even though I hadn't had much experience with them, I think I had a knack for computers right away. In high school, I was always better at math and science than I was at English, so it fit right in with that pattern. I've never been much of a writer, and in high school I made A's in most classes but B's in English. My roommate, Sean May, is really good with computers too, so I've learned some stuff from him. He says that when it comes to computer stuff, he's a nerd, and I think that's probably right.
This semester, I'm taking INLS 50 (Tools for Information Literacy), so I'm learning how to make a website and things like that. It's already taught me a lot of stuff I didn't know. I've also gotten some experience outside the classroom. This summer, I had an internship at Wachovia. One of my big projects was working on a database that incorporates information about the clients. It can also be used to set up meetings. It's kind of a Palm Pilot-type thing.
There are a lot of people who deserve credit for helping me make Academic All-ACC this past year. When I found out I'd made it, the first person I called was my sister. She told me it would be a great thing to put on my resume. All of my family has always been so supportive with my classes, even when I was in high school.
At Carolina, there has been a lot of study halls and a lot of studying on the plane home from road games. I wish Miss Burgess (McSwain) could have been here to see it. She would have really been happy. Wayne Walden is also a big help to us, and Miss Janice (Huffstetler) and Miss Cathy (Frank). Miss Cathy helps me a lot with my writing. They're not really in the spotlight, but we know how much they help us.
