o Connor Barth's 42-yard field goal as time expired gave Carolina a 31-28 win over fourth-ranked Miami. The win is Carolina's first ever over a team ranked in the Top 5 in the Associated Press poll. The previous high ranked team that the Tar Heels had beaten was #6 Florida State in 2001, #6 Duke in 1960 and #6 Navy in 1957.
o Carolina is now 2-4 against ranked teams this year. The Tar Heels are now 13-55-1 against teams ranked in the AP Top 10. UNC is now 1-31-1 against teams ranked in the Top 4 alltime.
o Barth's kick marked the first time Carolina had scored to win the game on the final snap of the contest since Dan Orner kicked a 47-yard field goal to beat Duke 23-21 in 2002. Barth is now 2 for 3 this year from 40 or more yards. He had a 50-yarder earlier this year. He is 9 for 11 for the year.
o Carolina amassed 545 yards of total offense, the second time this year the Tar Heels went over 500 yards. It was the most allowed by the Hurricanes this season (previous was 507 by Louisville). UNC had 575 against William and Mary in the season opener.
o Darian Durant passed for 266 yards tonight. That is the most by any one quarterback against Miami in 2004 (previous was 260 by NC State's Jay Davis).
o Durant had 330 total offense yards tonight, his season-high. It's the most since he had 393 at NC State in 2003.
o Darian Durant threw a pair of touchdown passes and now has 61 in his career, which surpasses Florida State's Chris Rix (60) for fourth on the ACC's all-time list. Durant has now thrown a touchdown pass in 31 of his last 37 games. Both Mike Mason and Scott Brumett caught their first touchdown passes of the season.
o Senior tailback Chad Scott started for the first time in his Tar Heel career tonight against Miami and responded with a career-best 175 yards and two scores on 25 carries. His 40-yard run in the second quarter tied a season and career best. His previous career high was 117 yards against Mississippi State in 2001 when he played at Kentucky. Scott left midway through the third quarter with a right hip pointer but returned early in the fourth quarter.
o Scott had 25 rushes against Miami, seven more than any other Tar Heel had this year (18 by McGill at Virginia). The 14-yard touchdown run by Scott in the second quarter was the longest scoring run
o Scott's 175 rushing yards were the most allowed by Miami this year. The previous high was 156 by T.A. McClendon of NC State. The 175 yards are the most by a Tar Heel since Ronnie McGill had 244 against Wake Forest in 2003.
o Scott is the third Tar Heel this year to rush for 100 or more yards. Jacque Lewis had 123 against William and Mary and 161 against Georgia Tech. McGill had 137 against William and Mary.
o Carolina had 31 first downs, the most by the Tar Heels since they had 31 against Syracuse in a triple overtime loss last season.
o The Tar Heels had 279 rushing yards, the most allowed by Miami this year (previous was 214 by Louisville). This is the third time this year Carolina has rushed for at least 250 yards in a game. (William and Mary 341, Georgia Tech 284)
o This was Miami's first loss in a game in which it scored at least 28 points since a Sept. 9, 2000, loss to Washington. The score was 34-29 Huskies.
o Senior wideout Jarwarski Pollock has now caught a pass in every game he has played at Carolina (31). He now has 137 career receptions to rank sixth all-time at Carolina.
o Wide receiver Mike Mason caught a 35-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. That was his first scoring reception of the year and the fourth of his career.
o Carolina ran 21 more plays than the Hurricanes (79-58). The Tar Heels held the ball for 36:44. Miami had possession for a season-low 23:16 (previous 26:33 against Louisiana Tech).
o This is the first time an unranked team has beaten Miami since East Carolina beat #9 UM 27-23 on Sept. 25, 1999.
o UNC tight end Jon Hamlett had five receptions tonight for 84 yards, including a 22-yard reception to help set up the winning field goal. Prior to this evening, Hamlett had five catches all year for 40 yards with a long of 21 yards. His previous single-game high was three last year against Maryland.
