CARLSBAD, Calif. - Tar Heel fans, here's your chance to own a great piece of University of North Carolina basketball memorabilia. Up for auction is a commemorative plaque made from the original maple floor of Woollen Gym, the home court of the 1957 NCAA champion basketball team.
The plaque is signed by the starting five members of the 1957 team: National Player of the Year Lennie Rosenbluth, Tommy Kearns, Pete Brennan, Bob Cunningham and Joe Quigg. The 1957 squad, coached by Frank McGuire, was one of the finest in Carolina basketball history, finishing 32-0 and prevailing in back-to-back, triple-overtime games to claim UNC's first-ever NCAA championship. In the legendary title game, the Tar Heels defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, led by Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain, by a score of 54-53 in triple OT.
In October of 1999, Sports Illustrated selected the 1957 NCAA title game of UNC vs. Kansas as its second-favorite game of all-time.
The plaque measures 15" wide by 17" tall, is custom-framed with pieces of the Woollen floor, features a photo of the entire 1957 team and also a metal plate that displays the starting five's signatures. Don't miss out on this chance to own a unique piece of Carolina basketball memorabilia!
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the University of North Carolina Athletic Department. The auction is part of a nationwide program with College Sports Online, which partners with UNC and nearly 160 university athletic departments and conferences to manage and maintain Official Athletic Sites.
