With the 91-78 victory over Kentucky Saturday, the Tar Heels snapped a four-game losing streak against the Wildcats, who had defeated Carolina in each of the last four seasons. The win was the first in the series for the Tar Heels since the 1995 NCAA Southeast Regional final in Birmingham, Ala. UNC now leads the series, 17-10.
Following a season-opening loss to Santa Clara, the Tar Heels have now won six straight games to improve to 6-1. Carolina last won six consecutive games at the start of last season.
With 91 points against the Wildcats Saturday, Carolina has now scored 90 or more points in four of its last five games. The Tar Heels have also scored at least 85 points in five of its last six games.
Junior Rashad McCants led the Tar Heels with a season-high 28 points on 7 of 15 shooting. He has now scored 20 or more points four times this season and 22 times in his career. McCants scored 20 points in the first half. He was also the last Tar Heel to score 20 in a half when he had 28 of his career-high 31 points in the second half at Georgia Tech on Feb. 10, 2004.
With the 28 points Saturday, McCants moved into the top 30 in career points in Tar Heel history. He now has 1,335 career points and passed both Al Lifson (1,322) and Pete Brennan (1,332) against Kentucky.
McCants was 4 of 7 from three-point range and has now hit a three-pointer in 22 consecutive games. He has hit at least one in all seven games this season and the final 15 of the 2003-04 season. This season, McCants has connected on at least three three-pointers in six of the Tar Heels' seven games. He is shooting 53.5 percent (23-43) from behind the arc on the year.
Junior Sean May had 14 points and a season-best 19 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and second in the last three games. May now has 17 career double-doubles.
Led by May, Carolina outrebounded the Wildcats, 51-30. The plus-21 rebound margin was a season-best for the Tar Heels. The previous high was plus-5 in the win over Tennessee.
Senior Jawad Williams scored 19 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field. He has scored in double figures in each game this season and 67 times as a Tar Heel. Williams has scored at least 18 points in four of the last five games.
Freshman Marvin Williams' three-pointer in the second half was the first of his collegiate career. He had five points and four rebounds on the afternoon.
Junior Raymond Felton had seven assists and now has 496 for his career. With just four more assists, he will become the ninth Tar Heel with 500 in a career.
