BAHAMA, N.C. - The North Carolina rowing team faced outside competition for the first time this spring on Saturday morning, when the Tar Heels met Duke for a scrimmage at Lake Michie. While the Blue Devils swept the second varsity eight races, UNC took the first two spots in each of the four novice eight pieces and claimed one of the varsity eight pieces.
"It was a great day, the closest we've been to Duke in the past three years," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "To have our novices sweep the races was awesome and to have the varsity eight grab one was amazing. I was also happy to see our second varsity eight hold on and be so close, because Duke has a lot of depth. Our attitude today was very good from piece to piece. We were very focused, very prepared mentally and physically."
Both teams raced in varsity eights, second varsity eights and novice eights for four 2,000-meter pieces. In the novice eight, UNC raced A and B boats, while Duke fielded a boat made of four varsity rowers and four novice rowers, billed as a third varsity eight. Each piece included a rating cap, with the stroke rating set at 24 for the first piece, 26 for the second, 28 for the third and 30 for the fourth.
UNC's varsity eight lineup was coxswain Terry McCloskey, Rebecca Bennett, Grace Wallenborn, Emily Dondero, Jess Ziebell, Jen Cox, Julie Domina, Sarah Stargel and Clara Leigh.
The second varsity eight saw some lineup changes from piece to piece. Lauren Portnow coxed the first two, while Kim Lyko took the third and Katie Sorensen the fourth. Seven rowers were in the boat throughout the competition: Mary Miller, Miranda Harple, Adriann Spinks, Christina Payne, Michelle Hall, Becci Foster and Amanda Snow. One of the varsity eight rowers filled the fifth seat in each piece, with Bennett racing the first, Dondero the second, Cox the third and Stargel the fourth.
Rowers in the novice A boat were Anna Fabiszewski, Mary Casale, Ashley Williamson, Cleo Washington, Christin Cotten, Sara Bentley, Catherine Nitz and Emily Glunz. In the novice B boat were Mallory Williams, Keegan Drenosky, Laura Rock, Lacy Gill, Conchita Brown, Beth Robinson, Katie Steele and Alexis Ziavras. Three coxswains - Regina Elwell, Edythe McNamee and Lauren Withycombe - rotated between the two boats. Withycombe coxed the first race in the A and the third in the B, McNamee the second and third in the A and the fourth in the B, and Elwell the first and second in the B and the fourth in the A.
The Tar Heels' next action is on March 13, when the travel to Clemson.
