15 Tar Heels Earn EAGL All-Academic Honors

Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- Fifteen members of the No. 10 University of North Carolina gymnastics team have been named to the 2004 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) All-Academic Team, including four-year honorees Maddy Curley, Skylar Inman and Amanda Smith. Of the eight EAGL teams, Carolina had the highest percentage of team members honored.
Curley is working toward a double major in in drama and international studies, Inman is majoring in English, and Smith is majoring in exercise and sport science.
Named to the team for the third year were Elisabeth Alsop (Spanish), Olivia Trusty (political science) and Amy Williams (biology).
Courtney Bumpers, who is ranked first in the nation on floor exercise and ninth in the country in all-around, is majoring in environmental science and was named to the team for the second year. Other second-year honorees were Mikel Hester (biology) and Cecilia Liu (exercise and sport science).
All five Tar Heel freshmen - Miranda Ross, Lisa Tegethoff, Courtney Turco, Christine Robella and Claire Smith - also made the team.
Rounding out the Carolina honorees was senior biology major Anna Wilson.
The Tar Heels are consistently one of the top academic teams in the conference. Last season, 13 Carolina gymnasts were on the EAGL All-Academic Team.
In order to be named to the EAGL All-Academic team, student-athletes must have a grade point average of 3.00 or higher in the two previous semesters. A record-tying 88 scholar-athletes from the eight EAGL schools were named to the 2004 EAGL All-Academic team. The 88 honorees matched the highest total in the nine-year history of the EAGL. In 1999 and 2000, a record 88 gymnasts were honored. Each of the eight EAGL schools had at least six gymnasts honored.
Of the 88 gymnasts, 10 were honored for the fourth year in a row, including seniors Katherine Schroeder (Carrollton, Tex.) and Rachel Sibert (Round Rock, Tex.) of Maryland, Crystal Beak (DeWitt, N.Y.) of New Hampshire, Maddy Curley (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Skylar Inman (Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.), and Amanda Smith of North Carolina, Mary Freyvogel (Monroeville, Pa.) of North Carolina State, Marcy Blitz (Lancaster, Pa.), Diandra O'Connor (Owasso, Okla.) and Lisa Yarosh (Seymour, Conn.) of Pittsburgh.
