CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Ross Cook went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and senior Mell Adams went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead North Carolina (14-4) to a 12-2 win and a two-game sweep of Princeton (6-3) Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels celebrated St. Patrick's Day by wearing green hats courtesy of Nike.
Freshman right-hander Robert Woodard (2-1) earned the win in his first collegiate start. He worked five strong innings, allowing just two runs on three hits and one walk. Woodard, who retired the last eight Tigers he faced, also struck out a career-high five batters.
In addition to Cook and Adams, third baseman Justin Webb went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and catcher Chris Iannetta drove in three runs to give him a season total of 22, which ranks second on the team.
After Princeton took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by B.J. Szymanski in the top of the first, Woodard and relievers Scott Senatore, Kevin Brower, Bryan Phillips and Michael Gross kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for the rest of the day. Szymanski and left fielder Adam Balkan had two hits apiece to lead Princeton. Tiger starter Aaron Herr (0-1) did not get out of the second inning and took the loss.
Down 2-0, the Tar Heels batted around and scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Following a walk to Greg Mangum and a single by Cook, junior designated hitter Marshall Hubbard singled to left field to score Mangum, extend his hitting streak to 12 games and drive in his team-best 25th run of the year. After a run-scoring ground out by Iannetta, center fielder Mike Daniel then singled through the right side to score Hubbard and give Carolina a 3-2 lead. Following a double to center by Webb, Adams singled through the left side to score a pair and push the advantage to 5-2.
The Tar Heels picked up where they left off in the second with three more runs. After Herr walked three consecutive batters, Iannetta picked up his second RBI of the day with a bases-loaded walk to make the score 6-2. The Tigers' Eric Walz entered in relief, and Cook scored when Daniel grounded in to a double play. First baseman Sammy Hewitt then singled to right field to plate Hubbard and give Carolina an 8-2 lead.
UNC added a run in the fourth when Iannetta singled through the left side to score Cook, who doubled to lead off the inning. In the fifth, the Tar Heels added runs on a sacrifice fly to center by second baseman Craig Corrado and when Adams, who doubled, came home on a passed ball. Webb led off the inning with a single and scored on Corrado's sac fly.
Carolina added its final run on an RBI single up the middle by Cook in the seventh.
The Tar Heels open ACC play this weekend with a three-game series at No. 19 Virginia.
