CHAPEL HILL -- University of North Carolina sophomore guard Rashad McCants was named to the Associated Press All-America third-team, the AP announced on Tuesday, March 23. Fellow Tar Heel sophomore Sean May garnered honorable mention All-America honors.
McCants, the leading vote-getter for the 2003-04 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, is Carolina's first All-America since Joseph Forte was a consensus first-team honoree in 2000-01.
The AP first team includes unanimous choices Jameer Nelson (Saint Joseph's) and Emeka Okafor (Connecticut), as well as Lawrence Roberts (Mississippi State), Josh Childress (Stanford) and Ryan Gomes (Providence).
McCants is one of three ACC players on the first three teams. NC State's Julius Hodge, the 2003-04 ACC Player of the Year, was named to the second-team. The rest of the second team includes Devin Harris (Wisconsin), Luke Jackson (Oregon), Andre Emmett (Texas Tech) and Blake Stepp (Gonzaga).
Duke's Chris Duhon joins McCants on the third team, along with John Lucas (Oklahoma State), Hakim Warrick (Syracuse) and Wayne Simien (Kansas).
Joining May as other ACC players to garner honorable mention are Luol Deng (Duke), B.J. Elder (Georgia Tech), Chris Paul (Wake Forest), Tim Pickett (Florida State), J.J. Redick (Duke) and Shelden Williams (Duke).
