CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman right-hander Daniel Bard allowed just three hits over six shutout innings, and No. 16 North Carolina (19-5, 3-1 ACC) put up seven runs in the second inning to post a 10-4 victory over No. 12 Florida State (20-6, 3-1 ACC) Friday at Boshamer Stadium. The win was Carolina's fourth in a row at home over the Seminoles and snapped FSU's nine-game winning streak.
ard (4-0) earned the first Atlantic Coast Conference win of his young career after surrendering just three runs and three walks over six innings. He struck out five Seminole batters and did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. Four Carolina relievers combined to work the final three innings.
Right fielder Marshall Hubbard and designated hitter Ross Cook each had three hits, and first baseman Sammy Hewitt and catcher Chris Iannetta each homered to lead the Tar Heel offense, which scored in double-digits for the seventh time this season. All nine starters had at least one hit for Carolina, and five Tar Heels recorded multi-hit games.
Carolina sent 11 batters to the plate and tied a single-inning season-high with eight hits en route to the seven-run second inning. Hewitt put the Tar Heels on the board with a two-run shot off the light pole in right center, his third homer in the last four games. The blast scored Hubbard, who had two hits in the inning. After three singles loaded the bases, Cook singled to left to score two. Iannetta capped the inning with a three-run home run to deep left that scored Cook and second baseman Bryan Steed, who singled. Iannetta's fifth homer of the year extended his hitting streak to a team-best 13 games.
The Tar Heels added three runs in the fourth when Hubbard singled through the left side to score Cook, who singled through the right side to start the one-out rally. After a walk to Hewitt loaded the bases, third baseman Justin Webb reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Iannetta and left fielder Jay Cox singled to plate Hubbard and give UNC a 10-0 lead.
FSU got on the board in the eighth on a solo home run to right center off the bat of right fielder Eddy Martinez-Esteve, his eighth of the year. The Noles tacked on three more in the ninth, highlighted by Dennis Anderson's two-run single. Martinez-Esteve had three hits on the night to pace the Noles at the plate.
After allowing all seven runs on eight hits, FSU starter Hunter Jones (2-2) was lifted after just 1.2 innings. DiCarlo Thompson came on in relief of Jones and gave up three more runs in 1.2 innings. Three more Seminole pitchers came on to keep Carolina off the board after the fourth.
The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Junior Garry Bakker is slated to start game two for the Tar Heels, and freshman Andrew Miller should go in game three.
