CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior right-hander Garry Bakker tossed seven shutout innings, and right fielder Marshall Hubbard went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead No. 10 North Carolina (27-9, 9-5 ACC) to a 4-0 win over Clemson (21-14, 7-4 ACC) Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tigers wrapped up a 2-1 game one win earlier Saturday. That game was suspended in the bottom of the sixth Friday due to a partial power outage at Boshamer Stadium.
akker (3-3) scattered seven hits and two walks en route to his first win since March 13. He struck out five and retired the final seven batters he faced. Senior Michael Gross worked the final two innings for his third save of the year. The shutout was the Tar Heels' first in Atlantic Coast Conference play since a 4-0 win at Maryland on April 13, 2003.
In addition to Hubbard, who now has a team-best 49 RBI, shortstop Greg Mangum, left fielder Jay Cox and second baseman Craig Corrado each had two hits. Corrado had the first multi-hit day of his collegiate career.
Clemson starter Robert Rohrbaugh (2-2) worked 6.1 innings and gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks. He stuck out two.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI single to right by Cox. The hit scored catcher Chris Iannetta, who walked to lead off the inning. Following a single from Hubbard, designated hitter Ross Cook bunted the both runners into scoring position before Cox got the Tar Heels on the scoreboard.
Hubbard gave the Tar Heels a couple of insurance runs with a two-run, two-out double in the seventh. Corrado singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice by Bryan Steed and took third on a wild pitch. After Iannetta walked for the second time in the game, Hubbard cleared the bases with a double to left center off Clemson reliever Josh Cribb.
The Tar Heels tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth as Mangum singled to the right side to score pinch runner Mell Adams and give Carolina a 4-0 lead. Adams came on to run for Cox, who reached on a fielding error by Clemson shortstop Russell Triplett.
The series concludes Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with Andrew Miller starting for the Tar Heels.
